2 accidents; one is fatal

Two traffic mishaps over the weekend have left one person dead and five others injured. The first occurred in the northern part of the country late Friday evening, where eighty-one year old Eduardo Acosta of Calcutta Village lost his life. Fifty-six year old Hector Manuel Torres of Altamira, Corozal reported that while he was driving towards the north from south near Rios Cocos on the Phillip Goldson Highway, he noticed a vehicle coming from the opposite direction swaying from one side of the road to the other. Torres tried to avoid hitting Acosta but could not avoid the collision and Acosta was hit and died on the spot. A post mortem was conducted and the doctor certified the death to be traumatic spinal shock syndrome due to the injuries sustained in the accident. Hector Torres has been served with intended prosecution as the investigation still continues.

Five Belize City men on the other hand were more fortunate. Twenty-one year old Darren Wright along with four others; adults: Kevian Godfrey and Avery Gordon and minors: seventeen year old Oscar Puga and sixteen year old Michael Finnegan, the son of the minister, were traveling on New Road early Sunday morning in a Toyota four Runner when Wright lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle careened into a lamppost near PUMA Gas Station; and was badly damaged. Wright received facial and head injuries, while Finnegan received abrasions to the forehead, bruises to both knees and right hand. Gordon was injured on the head and knees, while Godfrey was injured on his right shoulder and received bruises to right hand. Puga, on the other hand, was injured to the face, back and both knees. While the four passengers have since been treated and discharged, Wright remains hospitalized at the K.H.M.H.
