Faber says no impasse; fight is between the N.T.U.C.B. and G.O.B.

Patrick Faber

As the clock ticks toward February twenty-ninth, Faber says the ministerial committee is not planning on meeting again until the next scheduled meeting because he believes there is no impasse. Still yet, the Prime Minister is expected to make a presentation to the nation next week providing details of the economic picture.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“What they have asked for is time to do their consultation. How that consultation and getting feedback from the membership especially through the B.N.T.U. meetings turned in to a strike and possible demonstration is what behooves us. We’re saying if it is you wanted an opportunity from your membership what must be your hard-line position, then fine. That is what we agreed to at the meeting last week Thursday. But we also ask that for them at this time to be careful. Yes get a position come back and say yes, let’s finish off this proposal number one and say government you either change your position or stay the same. Let’s conclude the other issues we have on the collective bargaining agreement. If it is that people still feel strongly then do what you need to do but I reiterate now that these negotiations are ongoing and there is no impasse so to speak on the issues it has not broken down. My understanding is that there will not be a strike at this time I understand that there will be a demonstration to show their disagreement with what it is the government is saying at this time. But a strike is severe and I believe the teachers will not get to that point without going into this with the larger union body. And I want to make that point as well. This is not a fight between the Ministry of Education and the B.N.T.U. this is an issue between the Government of Belize and the N.T.U.C.B.”
