Accident on the Phillip Goldson Highway; several persons injured

Just after five this evening, there was an accident near mile seven on the Phillip Goldson Highway. It involved a Sports Utility Vehicle and a trailer truck. According to an eyewitness account, the SUV was extensively damaged while the trailer was flipped on the right side of the highway. Three persons, including a minor, travelling in the SUV were injured and taken by ambulance to the K.H.M.H.  According to information to News Five, a female employee of the proprietors of Ladyville Laundry Mat and Apartments had picked up the daughter of her employers and were traveling towards Ladyville. She reportedly lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the trailer that coming in the opposite direction. Tom Greenwood, who was shuttling tourist from Lamanai to the City, spoke with News Five about what he saw as they approached the scene of the accident.

Tom Greenwood, Eyewitness

“We were coming down; I was asked to drop some guests off at Lamanai and I picked them up back up and we were coming down. And when we reached that area between seven and eight, we saw traffic gathered and obviously there was an accident. I looked closer and there seemed to be a very large container type truck that was on its right side and there was a small blue SUV that was really totaled. And I could see the EMT, the Emergency Medical Technicians, from Bert on the job there and the police were magnificent; they had everything under great control. But it was a bad scene. It’s reminiscent of the many bad scenes that we’ve seen right there at that very spot. For some reason or the other that has been a hellhole for accidents. The EMT were attending to somebody in the back of the blue SUV and I was told that other people had already been removed, but it looked like a bad one indeed.”

Duane Moody

“Is this a frightening experience traversing that road?”

Tom Greenwood

“My friend, I sometimes pray to heaven that I don’t see another one, but in all my years of driving for tourism, we’ve come up on so many accidents on both the northern and western highways—this one happened on the Philip Goldson Highway—that I’ve become hardened to what I see there. I am a driver myself and it delivers a blow to your psyche. That area after leaving the Haulover Bridge going north and just before the international airport is highly traversed and they are going to have to expand that highway or do what the authorities do best.”

GOB-PLEAAAAAAASSSSEEEE PLACE SOME SPEEDBUMPS ON THSI HIGHWAY AT SAY ALL MAJOR CURVES BEFORE THOSE TRUCKS, BUSES AND OTHER LARGE VEHICLES KILL SOMEONE. IT IS NOW A RESIDENTIAL ZONE RIGHT UP TO LADYVILLE WITH MANY TURNS AND ROADS AND THE SPEED HAS TO BE SLOWED.
