2nd in command of the George Street Gang laid to rest

The funeral of Leonard ‘Ghost’ Myers, reputed to be the second in command of the George Street Gang in Belize City, was held in his home village of Gales Point, Manatee on Sunday afternoon. Meyers, along with three affiliates of the George Street Gang, was killed in brutal execution fashion at an apartment building at the corner of Dean and Plues Streets said to be one of the bases of the gang. Because of speculation of police involvement and street tension which seemed poised to explode, scrutiny of the burial of Meyers was intense. News Five has managed to acquire amateur video of the wake and funeral in the usually calm and peaceful village of Gales Point. A News Five team has put together this story and Duane Moody reports.

Despite a lot of speculation that Police would provide a blanketing presence at the wake and funeral of Leonard ‘Ghost’ Meyers held this weekend in Gales Point, Manatee, there was no sign of the law. On Saturday night, hundreds of Belize City and Gales Point residents came out to say farewell to Leonard ‘Ghost’ Myers, who lay in an open coffin clad in black military uniform with epaulets, badges and the word ‘Combat’ emblazoned on the left breast.

The mood was upbeat at the wake, but the sentiments expressed by the mother of Leonard Meyers left no doubt that there are serious undercurrents just below the surface.

Elizabeth Welch, Mother of Leonard Meyers

“Everybody will know what next; the whole wide world will know what’s next. I know what’s next and the almighty father will know what’s next. So I will leave that to them whosoever did that.”

Leonard Meyers Sr.

Leonard Meyers Sr., Father of Leonard ‘Ghost’ Meyers

“If it is the GSU or whosoever; I think that the justice that I want and in my mind regardless dah who or what, I don’t think it should just go like that. I think we could understand if you tell me one thing and dehn do me something else; that means that you disturb and really hurt me.”

On Sunday, when the body was taken to the small Gales Point church, there was still no sign of a police presence. Inside the church, the mood was calm throughout the service, except for one moment when a friend of Meyers broke down right beside the casket and had to be carried out.

From the Church, hundreds of persons, many of them young men and women, walked behind the casket as it travelled to its final resting place.

Today the top brass of the Police Department, in their debut appearance in their new commands, hosted their weekly press conference. Deputy Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Operations, Elodio Aragon Jr., gave the reason, but no apology, for the blocking of streets and increased operations in the George Street Gang turf.

Elodio Aragon Jr.

Elodio Aragon Jr., Deputy Commissioner of Police

“Police has blocked that street off because we do not want to create a problem where we will have a serious congestion or incidents involving traffic related accidents as a result of the operations taking place in that specific area and that is why it was cordoned off. But I am quite sure that within the ambits of the law, the police department has the authority to close off a street if it is deemed necessary for public safety.  The amount of police officers we have out there along with the security forces will continue. I think that we will continue to operate and command and control that area as long as we deem it necessary for public safety. And that will continue as far as I know.”

While Aragon did not divulge much on new information in the case of the four brutal murders, when asked about the attention the police is giving to particular gang members in light of the current tension, he stated that the policy of the department is to always be prepared.

Elodio Aragon Jr.

“I am quite sure that we are not putting tabs on anybody at this point in time. We do have our intel that comes to us and that is privy to our department. When it comes to how we view tension and things like that, I’d like to say that at the police department, we always plan for the worst case scenario and we always ensure that our operational viability on the ground is something that is ready to meet and face the issue at hand.”

According to Aragon, by the end of the week there should be more information forthcoming from the team in charge of the investigation. Duane Moody for News Five.

Two of the men killed in that brutal attack were buried over the weekend, while two others are expected to be buried later this week.

Of those who attended the funeral, I wonder what percentage are regular church goers.

  2. Liberty & Freedom says:

May he rot in hell…….. How many people did he kill or have killed? One less criminal on the street.

  3. Storm says:

Did Shiney hire the hit men to remove someone he thought was a threat to his leadership of the gang? That would explain better than anything how the killers entered without a fight and surprised the victims.

  4. Marie says:

Who the hell do they think they are-they will threaten society and the police-lets give them the war they want and see who wins-quit the negotiating and let the gangs kill each other, the police deal with them if they think they are bad or leave them to the mexicans

  10. WOW says:

I don’t think GSU are trained killers, so this guys parents should stop talking about going to the devil. What are they going to do light the candle and burn pot on the fire hearth. Doing evil to the members of the GSU is not the answer, they were supposed to guide their son better than that…well you know they basked in the drug deals their son was involved in. They should know that their son is the devil disguise because he has assassinated too many young men in the city. May he burn in hell!!!!

  11. inthediaspora says:

Sorry to see the video of the funeral for “ghost.” In my view, television coverage should be limited to Belizeans who contribute to the society, not try to destroy it. Certainly it should just have been a footnote in the rundown, not the second item in first block.

  12. Priorities says:

waht is a gang, what do they exist for? to commit crime. MURDER, RAPE, ARMED ROBBERY, EXTORTION. i think the media should show both sides, made public Ghost’s rap sheet. the media has a populist coverage.

  13. Giya says:

All the negative dont have to be said death is for everyone,

  14. Giya says:

You all have love ones so you all that dont nothing good to say keep the rubage to unu self and shet the hellp up,you all have family and am sure some of you have bad stuff up your sleves its just a matter of time for it to be out.so i suggest you leave the family alone to grief for there love one and leave the dead to sleep.

  15. Al says:

These people are in denial. Why bother take his body to church nothing can save him from where he is gone to. Ghost has already stood before the same God his mother thinks she is crying out to, and God already says depart from me I know you not. I can see Ghost now begging, pleading that he did’nt know what he was doing as he is ushered into hell. I am surprised they did not bury him with a gun so he could shoot his way into heaven.

This mother is so pitiful, how could she not know her son was a high ranking member of the geroge stree gang. She had to know what his business was, how could she think he would die a natural death. I am even more sorry for her because she thinks God is on her side. God is against evil and will not, cannot cross over to help those who live outside his righteousness.

The Bible says an eye for an eye, he may have taken life or given orders to take life, now he has forfeited his life. Is his mother going to take his place in the gang and issue orders as to whom she wants killed in retalation or is she going to kill them herself. Someone in his gang knows what was going down, they know who he was dealing with. Why is his gang not speaking out, only his mother, go figure that one.
It will all come out. If the father who lives in gales point will look at the days before he died, he may have a part of the key, the girlfriend has another piece of the story, they just want to believe the police did it, in the mean time thery could be overlooking the obvious becasue it is so in the open, but they maybe afraid themselves, I would be.

Those men knew their killers. Could a part of the problem be that they lost the ammunition, gun and grenade that was found under the church. Were those weapons to be a part of some big plan that had to be put down because they lost their ammo. So many possibilities.

  16. Belize Supporter says:

People of Belize, rise up and take back your streets from the gangs that are the cancers and parasites which infect the body of Belize. The cancer which takes pleasure in destroying peoples lifes, families, businesses, tourism, Belize and its reputation. Cancers need to be aggressively cut from the body and parasites need to be erradicated from society by any means necessary.

  17. Louisville,Ky says:

This is why the Jewel is going thru all this madness and mayhem. Too much parents being fully aware of what their children are doing and condoning all that mad ! @@@!
Charity begins at home, period! And no Politician, no police, no teacher, no Judge no nobody but the parents are responsible to ensure that a child be taught to respect themselves, respect others and their belongings.
Everybody else knew what Ghost was up to, so his parents cannot plea ignorance.
You live by the sword, you die by the sword……. Straight like that!

  18. me says:

Yap, everybody knew what GHOST was up to and WHO he was.

Why he had so many people at his funeral??????? you would have thought a saint was buried that day!!

Why glamourize a funeral ceremony of a known criminal, who has helped gang banging common place because small kids growing up are afraid of gang life, so they join a gang to have back up?

People in George st are upset he died because all his criminal activities fed them, all of them sucked from the teet. get up off ur @$$#$ Belize. don’t harbor known criminals and idolise their actions.

    May he rot in hell!!!!!

  19. me says:

Then politicians still have heart to say we live in a good country. they seemed to have forgotten what belize was like when people could comfortably go sit at the park on a sunday afternoon, go walk down albert street to go buy ice cream at blue birds, people helping other people in need when hurricane comes, or when someone’s car shuts down on teh road, kids playing marble on teh sidewalk without fear of having being killed with a stray bullet. and Politicians still have the heart to lie and say we live ina good country.

we lived ina good country because belizeans were friendly, willing to help, law abiding. our natural resources are rich and plentiful. but now the people are miserable and weary, cost of living going thru the roof with gas prices, electricty and GST.cruise ships warn travellers of coming to Belize, our rosewood is poached by the truck loads and politicians still say we live in a good country.

the “jewel” is getting scruffed up more and more everyday and we’re not teh only ones who see it.

  20. me says:

Georgestreet…..please no talk about “paying respects”. people like him no deserve no respect.

  21. Al says:

@Giya,, are you serious, are you a gang member or just plain living in denial. Have you become so use to the violience that you accept it as normal. Don’t hate those who want a better way of life for the country. Do you see the tourists are not comig, do u know what that means.

The family need to get some sense, they need to ask Tillett some questions, why is he not speaking, how muh does he know. They need to check his house for blood stains. Why don’t you star investigating for the famly you are protecting.

  22. Seletar says:

Are we getting fed up at last? Is it time for Belizean spring, for protests to bring down the government and corrupt and ineffective institutions? I hope so.

A few score dirty politicians and the crooked businessmen who bribe them, and a few score more unrepentant criminals have turned the Jewel into garbage. If they are eliminated, and a strong democracy with checks and balances to prevent future government abuse, our little paradise could be reborn for us and our children. Agree or disagree?

  23. unhappy says:

@ me… LOL you told Georgestreet right…. I agree with all the comments. They expect people fi feel sorry fi them and hear them out when they are a menace to our society. About time they feel what the family and love ones of the people they kill and innocent kids feel … I hope they all burn in hell. The devil himself should come for the rest of them . They are devil workers…

  24. belizean says:

Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone

    Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

  25. MzDee says:

@inthediaspora I agree. The television coverage of Ghost’s funeral should have not been aired. In fact, I refused to look at it because the media is posing ghost, spirit, whatsoever his name is to be as a celeb. All contributions to Belize were negative from his end.I have no remorse whatsoever for the four gang members who were brutally slain. However, sorry for all the innocent lives that he and his so called gang members have taken.

  26. John Boy,Carson,Ca says:

    God came for sinners.

  27. Sarah says:

My belizean people we are all alive in the World because of God Mercy. please let us pray for all the murder victims of Belize and their families. to stop crime and building more prisons in Belize the Goverment and the wealthy families need to stop poverty in the nation what they need to do is privide all the children free education, free text books, free school feeding program, free clothing for all, good paying jobs for all. free housing for all. My Belizean people let us not forget that everything we have belongs to God.

  28. Illuminati says:

Sad, to say, but a perfect opportunity for a martyr to have take out a big portion of the cancer that plagues our society.

  29. good ridence says:

because 4 ppl died…many will get to live another day… i am glad they are dead!! so much disappointment to see ignorant ppl respect them…. it seem they are encouraging crime by havin that huge funeral!!

  30. bzn_who cares says:

I am not sure why the police allowed these guys to fire weapons at the burial. I think the police needed to have some kinda presence, even if it was just from a distance. They glamourize a known murderer.
Yes we have all sinned but there is much difference. If I did you an injustice and feel remorseful after, I can ask your forgiveness. But if I kill a person, there is no way I can ask for forgiveness. They have committed horrific acts of violence and to see the way they died, Karma is truly a !@#$%. But it seems to me from some of the comments here that these guys weren’t all that bad. Well They chose their way of life. It wasn’t forced on them. And don’t make excuses for them. The fast life they seek only last for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs in a movie…. not the real world

  31. b.Jones says:

@Belizean…sing that when you lose a loved one by the hands of evil people like “Ghost”.

We are God’s children, not idiots.

If we were to go with your indirect logic we should all sleep with our doors open and if we to get robbed and killed we should just turn the other cheek because we too have sinned before…lol

  32. Bible says:

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

    Galatians 6:7-8
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

    Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

    Psalm 55:15
Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

  33. voice of reason says:
