Police say international funding died for scholarship recipient

Douglas Hyde

Do the Right Thing, is a youth oriented program devised by the Community Policing Unit. It looks for at-risk youths to recognize and invest in their future by awarding them scholarships. The 2010 third place winner, Micah Goodin was a poet whose thirst for thought provoking words, became quenched by advocacy.  Goodin became a founding member of NationBuilders, an advocacy group which has attempted to bruise several politicians in the ruling party. So when Goodin lost his scholarship, many thought it was because of political victimization, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The scholarship donor no longer supports the program and his scholarship was on a specific timeframe that started its countdown while he was still in high school. The National Youth Program Coordinator, for the Police Department, Douglas Hyde explains.

“Micah was third place winner of the “Du di Rait Ting” Program. He obtained a scholarship, which is a two year scholarship from SJCJC looking at specifically the Associate Degree at SJCJC. However, he was in third year at the high school then in 2010 and so he would have obtained or started the scholarship in 2011; which cut it to a one year program from 2011 to 2012. My understanding since picking up the situation this week—Monday was when Micah for the first time spoke to me about the whole scenario—is that he went December to SJCJC for his report card and they explained to him that he cannot obtain his report card because of outstanding bills and that his scholarship was suspended. Well he didn’t know of the suspension he mentioned and likewise, we here at the Community Policing didn’t know about the suspension. Immediately when he spoke to me, I made contact with my colleagues in terms of where we stand in terms of the scholarship and to meet with individuals at SJCJC to garner more information about the whole thing. Monday we spoke to the finance officer there at SJCJC and we were of the knowledge that the scholarship was still on. Tuesday I received another information that no, the scholarship was literally suspended for real. And of course yesterday afternoon, I fully got the confirmation that the scholarship is not just suspended; it s a program that started two years ago through SJC outreach program, through a group named Hunters Commission Scholarship Program. This is an international group that has worked with the SJC specifically for this type of situation with high risk youth; but the program had finished. And the internal changes at SJCJC looked at the program and they stopped it likewise. So that left Micah without a scholarship. We know he’s been an exceptional, well student; he’s like a poster boy for us in the “Du Di Rait Ting” specifically in Belize District because in all the years since the “Du Di Rait Ting” in 2005, we had winners from the other districts and Micah is the first winner from Belize District. We made some phone calls; some contacts with some persons. I started getting some calls yesterday with persons who wanted to find out what they can do. I know that the chairman from Kremandala, Mister Evan X Hyde, who likewise is assisting in the process. This morning, Mister Dean Fuller from Fultec called me in terms of his support and assistance to this whole process which he is willing to assist in the whole fees that is there at SJC and this semester to cover it for Micah.”

I’m happy that it appears there will be a good resolution of this matter. I hope the basic program can grow and become better sustained in the future.
