What is the PM’s relationship with George Street?

Dean Barrow

It seems that while the entire country supports the government to find a strategy with haste that would end the violence on the streets, many don’t believe that any Prime Minister of Belize should hold private discussions or negotiations with gangs. But the meeting that occurred on Tuesday also included Minister of Housing Michael Finnegan. PM Barrow and Finnegan hold the distinction of being area representatives for Queen Square and Mesopotamia, areas plagued by crime. During the question and answer session of the press conference, the PM was questioned about his relationship with the George Street gang.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“There will not be any attempt at that sort of that thing on the part of George Street. While on the based of the interviews this morning, we believe that there is good reason for our confidence in that regard; we’re taking no chances. I’ve said to you that the security forces will do everything that is required to make assurance doubly sure. The key leaders of George Street have left the city under an arrangement with the security forces and their location is one in which we expect them to continue to be over the next few days.”

Jules Vasquez

The base of the gang falls within Mesop, geographically, but I suspect that many of the key players in gang vote in Queen’s Square—the two divisions being so close. Would you explain the sort of relationship that, as the area representative, you must have—you or Mister Finnegan must have—with these individuals and how that factors into the whole state of play and the talks that have been ongoing?”

Dean Barrow

“The only relationship I have is the relationship of an area representative to his constituents at large. I don’t know that that relationship features in this equation at all, at all. In fact, I will tell you it does not. I don’t know whether Minister Finnegan wants to answer the half of the question that was put to him, but I am quite clear that my being the area representative is to some extend completely incidental.”

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Mark King offered his condolences to the family of the slain men, via Facebook.  King, who referred to himself as the Minister Responsible for Gangs, offered clarity to people and said he would be willing to take recommendations and condemned the media for being capable of destroying the country.

In what sane country would the government order the security forces to PROTECT the worst of the worst gangsters?

What relationship between George Street and Dean Barrow is hidden behind the curtains?

Power to the People, it’s time for change.

  2. maya says:

Fool di tawk but dah noh fool di listen. How dis person become PM?

  3. Ricky Malthus says:

Then, Barrow explain why you rushed from so-called high level Caricom meeting to answer questions on behalf of gang members having a press conference in Belize; explain also why you threaten in the days leading up to the last general elections that Belize will go up in conflagration if UDP should lose the election; explain why you bought the gangs’ silence by paying them off with our tax money; and explain why since the late1960′s you have been cavorting with these same gang leaders. Is it true that you finance these gangs? Since the PUPs won’t ask the hard questions, we the people are asking these penetrating questions. Since Jules and the Amandala and Reporter are giving you a free pass, we are asking these questions. We expect the truth. Resign if you won’t tell the truth about these gangs and who the true leader is.

  4. Marie says:

Bankrupts cant vote. Other people cant vote-why not pass a law that membership in any gang means you cant vote then we won’t care about gang members having a vote etc? Then politicians can come down hard on them and not have to worry whether they will be punished election day? start thinking people.

People need to stop pointing fingers as it is not an easy job for law enforcement. Laws need to be past that will give the Arm forces and the Police department power to guaranteeing crime infested zone.
“Like every gang, I believe it was an internal affair.”
The George street Gang is a criminal terrorist operation and a threat to democracy.
No Government in the best interest of there citizens should lobby with any group involved in crimes against democracy.
I am sure that GOB nor GSU had anything to do with this inhuman act.

What GOB needs to do is to target the gangs and take them of the streets and try to rehabilitate the members, If that dose not work, use the full hand of the law.

I want to challenge the Embassy of Belize, to ask fellow Belizean in this Great Country The USA
to finance protective gear to our Law enforcement back home “Belize”.
Lets take back the Jewel before it is too late.

We all love Belize and some day, we will go back, but to a peaceful home.

  8. Steel says:

Sad to say, but Barrow you keep disappointing us. From the day you sat down to reason with these criminals you failed Belize. You know know deep down that you don’t know what the hell to do now, so stop selling the Belizean people dreams!

  9. BS says:

I wish the government (Dean Barrow, Mark King etc..) would also send condolences to the numerous people who’s lives these pathetic and coward men have taken. We are suppose to have sympathy? If the law had convicted ALL (not one of them, not two of them..ALL) of these men for the numerous murders have committed or authorized, the government would be wiping their hands clean off them. They deserved what they got..and honestly don’t care who did it..they deserved it..because what you do to other will come back worse! AND YES I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!

  10. freddy says:

then family of the 4 gangs that was kill should be ashamed of themself thinking that they are innocent.these gangs kill shoot people like they are wild animals in the city.in my opinion the pm need to deploy bdf in the city not just a certain area they are making a salary sitting down on there @$$.the minister an the pm don’t care because they are safe the gangs won’t target them they Will target innocent bystanders.i don’t see the mothers of the gangs members speaking out when the gangs are killing innocent people now they now what its like for there love ones to die.that’s my truth.

  11. Al says:

In what country do you see two top officials meet in private with gang members. Again this country is being looked at as being stupid and incompetent. I understand that these two people grew up with some of these thugs’ parents and they may feel some allegiance to them, but what about the good of the country. This government have gone too far in building a friendship with these gangs, so at what point can they enforce the law to deal with their criminal activity. They are selling out the country to the domestic terrorist for votes, that makes this PM and Finnegan enemies of the country, vote them out you good citizens who are tired of being held hostage.

  12. rod says:

Did Mark King send condolences to the family of Orlando Williams and Marco Valle

  15. Elgintinez says:

Dean Barrow need to start acting like Commander and Chief and not commander of the streets.

  16. b.Jones says:

Rod, you’re a whole next problem Belize face..If its not killing its dealing with people like you. People with sense could never understand / see / agree with what u have to say. Just shut your face

  17. Elgintinez says:

Barrow need to start acting like commander in chief.

  18. eyeforaneye says:

Belize its time to unite and call for immediate action. It is sad but true that we have incompetent and arrogant leaders; and mediocre justice system. The prime minister and this ministers must resign for protecting criminals, shame on them. When innocent people are being killed and youths are being targeted by molesters the prime minister did not care, not even to come out on national tv and offer assistance. Its very ironical,” Who Kill With Iron With Iron Die”, but in Belize, “Who Kill With Iron the GOB protect them” . Why ? Yes, the prime minister meets with gang leaders but not with the people of Cayo who were demanding justice for the recent murders of Suzene and Jasmine. What more should we have to take as a country? Should we have to tolerate this bunch of crap? We the people have the power, we elected them and we can vote them out. Let’s stand for our democratic rights. EYE FOR AN EYE!

  19. JT says:

I had such high hopes for Dean Barrow. I honestly thought we would be entering a “Golden Age” of sorts upon his initial election. Wow – was I mistaken! Belize is falling apart under his “leadership.” Now he puts the safety of gangsters above the safety of law abiding citizens…?! What a sad, sad joke. He needs to wake up and start doing things right, lest he goes down as the worst prime minister Belize has ever seen.

  20. Frank says:

I am a concerned Belizean living in the USA and Belize. It seems to me that the Prime minister and minister Finegan are weak when it comes to making decisions. That could be because they are in cahoots with the gangs. We need strong leaders who can stand up to the gangs and do whatever it takes to take them down and out once and for all. They are hurting every citizen in Belize. The world is looking at Belize with a sore eye. Belize is now a country to avoid. Shame on the PM and his party.

  21. Sweet P says:

Live by the gun, die by the gun. How can the Bze PM afford to pay gang bangers 500 dollars a week. While orhans are sleeping on the cold cement floor without beds .

  22. belizean f says:

PM made an “arrangement” with these criminals? I am curious about those arrangements!!!

  23. BelAm says:

I am Belizean American, residing in the US, I was sick to my stomach to see what was unfolding in front of my eyes in our beloved jewel Belize, on Jan, 8/2013. I grew up in the area where all this senseless violence is going down, I am very afraid to go in my old neighborhood, because of these heartless criminals that inplague my old neighborhood. They crimals are my generation kids, these tugs that are killing out their generations were little kids when I left Belize, so many of these gang fools, were in diapers when I left Belize, for the record one of them that is in hiding right now with securty protect from PM, Dean Barrow, is my family and I am so upset, that he is in protection, and all these innocent citizen of Belize is dead, because of him and the now expired “Pinky” also I remember him as a little rusty lookinf boy in Belize. Dean Barrow and Michael Finnigan hand out in our neighborhood where these criminal runs, I came from the nighborhood, so I know what I am talking about. Some many Belizean friends I talk to since these last killing in Belize, some of my friends live in Belize and some is out in US, and most of us came from that same gang infected area, George St, Dean St, The Canal Side, Rocky RD, Basra St, Etc Etc. As I said before I am a family member with one of these gang tug, and I personally had a hard and long conversation with “The George St” gang leader aunt, she lives in the US, and I ask her what do she know, she told me they have him in hide, I said to her who have him in hiding, she told me she don’t know. I will continue to pray for my country Belize and I pray that God rid Belize of all these gang affiliates, if it is even a family member. To PM Dean Barrow and Michael Finnigan, you are letting down our country for these gang tugs, your Belizean people need you to lead this country and stop being these idiots friends. I feel for my Belize people that have to live in this mess, PM Dean Barrow, the world is watching what is going on in belize your are loosing tourism $$$, because of being friends with these gang members, stop protecting them, and hiding them when the heat is on. This is very bad publicity for Belize right now, and the New Year has just started!!!
