George Street Gang on sabbatical

Dean Barrow

Most of the city would still not be at ease because many would assume that the George Street associates would retaliate the loss of their fallen brothers. Prime Minister Dean Barrow told the media that a delegation that he led, including both Ministers of National Security and Housing held a special conference with the leaders of the George Street Gang. It was arranged for the leaders to leave the city and the Prime Minister said that he expects them to keep their word by not retaliating against the people who they believe committed the murders.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I said they went under an arrangement with the government—they went completely of their own free will as a consequence of the discussion we had. Present in that discussion were the ministers of the national security, of housing, of human development; together with Minister of State, Mark King and C.E.O. in the Ministry of National Security.  We reasoned with the individuals, the leaders. We made clear that it would be absolutely unthinkable for there to be any attempt at retaliation against innocent citizens. I will say that right from the start of those discussions, they freely volunteered their commitment that absolutely nothing like that would happen. Now I say to residents of the City, I say to citizens of this nation that notwithstanding that particular development, as you have heard, the security forces are putting in place all that is necessary to make assurance doubling sure. But we do think that it was extremely helpful that we were able to secure that kind of commitment from the leaders. These people have premises outside of the city. I don’t know that we can say it’s for rehabilitation purposes. It is perhaps better put as a departure that helps to assure us that they are going to be far removed from Belize City and to help to give us the additional comfort that they mean what they say when they undertake to abide by the laws of this country and to, in particular, not to engage in any random acts of violence at all against innocent citizens. There will be a special proclamation in relation to zone 4 so that emergency measures can be put in place with respect to sealing off that particular zone.  I say again that I am convinced that there will not be any organized effort from that zone on the part of the George Street people. But recognize that we tend to speak of these gangs as though they are completely centralized; that’s not necessarily the case. The structure from the way I understand it can be fairly loose and they can be satellites and perhaps quasi independent operators. So when I speak to the commitment that we have received from the leaders—when I tell you that for whatever it is worth—I believe that that commitment will be maintained. I stress that day cannot speak for the quasi independent agents.”

As you just heard, a special proclamation is being rushed for Zone Four of Belize City which includes George Street. That proclamation is expected to increase troops and patrols in that area while locking it down from potential threats.  The location of the George Street Gang leaders has not been disclosed and it is not clear when they would return to their base of operation.

This pretty much sums it up. The Prime Minister speaks on behalf of his core constituents! This is the legacy of the UDP, pandering to a core group of supporters irrespective of their destructive effect on civil society. What a great product that great institution, the Norman Manley Law School , has given us!! The reality is that this is just the beginning. We will see in the future these gangs become active in the political arena especially so when the UDP becomes the opposition. That is one reason they go to great pains to accommodate them. Just look at the history of garrison constituencies in Jamaica and where these “learned attorneys” got their education. The rest speaks for itself. God help us!!

You can’t negotiate with or appease animals. There is no place in the Jewel for career gangsters, so lock them up or hunt them down. Place a bounty on them and the law-abiding majority will gladly help in the task.

If gangsters want war with society, let’s get on with it and get it over quickly and permanently. Then the national nightmare of the last many years will finally be over and we can open our eyes to a brighter future.

R u !@!@# kidding me, this shows guilt on the part GOB. If the GOB wants to make a statemet with these state sanctioned murders , then do so and not be scared of these streets thugs who are acting out in retalliation. People needs to understand that the GOB is in no position to deal w these senseless crimes, because they themselves are ill equiped to solve basic crimes. Belize is !@#$% doom if the GOB is clueless in solving these murders that are happening within the city limits.

  4. SOLO says:

  6. Sw@gville says:

Why hold meetings with gang leaders in your office Mr. “P” Minister.I bet a person wanting some help from your constituence can’t even smell your fart, but you can have “GANG LEADERS” in there. You should have took the leaders in and locked them up.This makes no sense everytime bad people die the whole city is shut down.People are scared because the gangs have bigger guns than the police and the police are never around to help. They always reach after someone is dead.Sad!!!!!

  7. nigel says:

How many of you think that the P.M sent these low lives out of the city so that the cartel won’t kill more of them? This is total bull!!! So to protect innocent civilians you are going to whisk these terrorists to an undisclosed location for our safety? Come on Dean do you take us for a$$e$$? What is to stop them from killing people in whatever community they went to? I am above all insulted by this poor excuse for a Prime Minister and his merry bunch of retards. We all know who (or which ministers in the present government) these scumbags work for so as I said before Mr. P.M don’t pi$$ on my head and tell me that it’s rain. We all know the GSU aren’t smart enough to carry out such a precise and covert hit; their track record can prove that. They are used to going in and shooting up the place and somehow causing as much noise and confusion as possible. Even if they wanted to kill these waste of human lives they would have simply gone in shoot up the place and put a gun in each of these animals hands and claim self defense. If by some long measure of possibility that it was a state sponsored hit (which is far from reality because you don’t kill your valuable employees) I would personally arrange a parade for Mr. Vidal and the GSU for they would have done this country a great service. I hope the citizens of this country can sleep good at night knowing that your prime minister has sent his animals… oh yes that’s right he didn’t want to say where he sent them for their own protection. Why hide their location Mr. p.m? So tell me now who are you really trying to protect? My guess is they went to George street land Gales Point Manatee… hint, hint to the cartel.

What a useless pm and gov. I wonder what he promised them this time or how much he is paying them this time why is his idiot pm dealing with these people as if they were business people mein the incompetence is overwhelming resign barrow resign you are a total failure at your job if you notice 145 people died last year and this pm never once came out to give his condolences to the families of all the murdered innocent people but he comes out for gang members I tell you this is one corrupt useless incompetent pm and gov. You make me want to vomit.

  9. belizean says:

I don’t see Obama meeting with gang leaders or the mexican president meeting with gang leaders, hmmmm!!!!

  10. Truth says:

The irony in all this is that, “It is not a gang retaliation”. However there was the need to escort them out else where for what purpose???. Who do u think is listening you foooool. Take a walk on the street and see how secure it is. Then PM you can go and give a press conference and be able to guarantee the safety of your people, that is if you do care.

Who governs the country you or the Gangs?

Are you in power to govern a country and its people OR to sit and wait for things to get out of control to actually be able to notice the cries and necessity of your people.

I do commend the people who stood up and shut down the business to protect their employees. This is what the PM should have done for his country and his people, protect, govern and work with them.

Paying criminals is not a solution..

  11. Analyst says:

why if you belong to MS13 or just have a tattoo of MS13 you are charged with a crime, BUT if you belong to George Street Gang you can meet with the Prime Minister and his thug Ministers in their office and work out a deal. are there official gangs now that are legal. come on press the PM was given a free pass at the press conference.

  12. Genotu Rembiuos says:

As I read all of your comments above, I conclude that we have very competent people in our country. Simply the wrong ones are in power, NEGOTIATING WITH GANGS !!!??????????? WHAT THE F^%&* IS THAT ???
LOCK THEM UP TO KEEP SAFE AND SECURE THE INNOCENT HARD WORKING PEOPLE!!!!
YOUR PROCEDURES PROVES THAT YOU KNEW THIS WAS COMING DEAN BARROW!!!!

  13. Louisville,Ky says:

The PM asking the gangs to leave the City for their own safety. Are you kidding me? You got to be joking!
Mein……I don’t know if I should laugh, or if I should cry. For real.

  14. dj x says:

moving them from bz city to other districts would ease the killing but increase the crime rate of other district.

  15. impartial says:

last time he gave them jobs, now he gives them state-sponsored (meaning taxpayer money) security…what is next? drugs and guns? a seat in the house? You alaways see the spanish get jailed because they belong to gangs, what happens to the rest? throw them in jail too!!

  16. JT says:

Absolutely unbelievable! This government is a total disgrace and an utter disappointment. Since when did gangs become a legitimate organization with which the Prime Minister must negotaite? You don’t negotiate with terrorists! The only meeting that should be entertained is with these terrorists behind bars and the only discussion to be had is understanding what things could have made a positive difference in their lives. Sadly, there is no hope for these gang members, but there is hope for the youth that have not yet been corrupted. We need to look to our future; we need to break the cycle!

  18. Seletar says:

I agree with most of these comments, especially Analyst. Mere membership in any of the gangs should be a criminal offense, where the criminal can be locked up for 25 years more or less. I don’t mind if GOB wants to support these animals, as long as they are in prison at the time.

  19. bmp chic says:

I agree with you Nigel, look what they did to Arthur Young…… Thats proof my people , no GSU will kill like that ….. THINK

  20. Southern says:

What a disgrace on GOB’s part. Utterly outrageous!!! Stop giving these damn wannabe gangsters a sense of identity. Seems like the Prime Minister condone their actions. Law abiding citizens are continually getting trampled on and their rights are given no consideration.

  21. Joe says:

The gang is a cancer to society,

  22. Al says:

Did I read what the PM said corectly. This man seems to have taken theg side of the gang members. He reasoned with the gang leaders. You cannot make a pact with the devil and win, the devil will win. He just sent a message to the gang of terriost that it is ok to take some time out from retaliation, so what they will take some time out and then come back to the city and then go back to killing. He knows who these gang leaders are, he just gave them the ok to be an organized criminal group. He validated their activity. You poor people who must live with this should run the PM out of the country, he just told you all he is ok with you being killed, robbed and living scared, but he protects the gang. He is so useless, what government make deals with gangs, please if anyone knows correct me.

  23. Joe says:

People need to stop pointing fingers as it is not an easy job for law enforcement. Laws need to be past that will give the Arm forces and the Police department power to guaranteeing crime infested zone.
“Like every gang, I believe it was an internal affair.”
The George street Gang is a criminal terrorist operation and a threat to democracy.
No Government in the best interest of there citizens should lobby with any group involved in crimes against democracy.
I am sure that GOB nor GSU had anything to do with this inhuman act.

What GOB needs to do is to target the gangs and take them of the streets and try to rehabilitate the members, If that dose not work, use the full hand of the law.

I want to challenge the Embassy of Belize, to ask fellow Belizeans in this Great Country The USA
to finance protective gear to our Law enforcement back home “Belize”.
Lets take back the Jewel before it is too late.

We all love Belize and some day, we will go back, but to a peaceful home.

The only thing that makes sense to me in Dean’s apology is that he is using the tactics used by Great Britain when they shipped their criminal to Australia. It would be OK if the weeping women and other family members would follow the leaders out of town and have them set up their own community in the middle of no where, (somewhere in the Pine Ridge Mountain). I’ve always respected Dean but this crazy. He should lock these gang leaders up for the good of the society. He shouldn’t be begging them to leave.
