Feeshia, another Felix murdered

Feeshia Felix

The cycle of violence is unending; this weekend alone three persons were killed in a span of twenty-four hours. The most tragic is the murder of Feeshia Felix, a twenty-two year old woman who was asleep in her family’s home on Gill Street when a hail of bullets penetrated her house. She expired when one landed on her forehead. Feeshia was the daughter of the deceased activist, Therese Felix, who died in 2008. Her family has been beset by the violence; her two brothers Tyrone and Faron, also died as a result of gun violence while surviving siblings were shot in separate incidents.  Over the weekend, the two remaining siblings were detained at Eastern Division. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A pre-dawn shower of bullets on Saturday has once again called grave attention to the plight of one Belize City family, well aware of the tragedies that have befallen its members since May 2006.  Feeshia Felix, one of five children born to community activist Therese Felix, was killed during an early morning attack on their residence on Gill Street over the weekend.  What precipitated this act of unrestrained force is one for the Crimes Investigation Branch to unravel.  Twenty-two year-old Feeshia was fast asleep in her bedroom when it was struck by a volley of shots that perforated the zinc fence, as well as the building’s plywood walls.

Raphael Martinez

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

“Police responded to a shooting incident at number six Gill Street in Belize City, where they saw twenty-two year old Feeshia Felix lying, apparently dead, with apparently one gunshot wound to the forehead.  Initial investigations revealed that at approximately 2:40 a.m., her brother, who was inside the house was awaken by the sounds of apparent gunshots.  He got up, reportedly called for his sister but received no response.  He then made checks inside her bedroom, where she was seen lying motionless on her bed.”

Feeshia is the third amongst her siblings to be shot and killed.  Her brothers, sadly, have all been victims of gun violence, dead or alive.  On Mother’s Day 2006, elder brother Tyrone was gunned down while on his way home from a concert.

Therese Felix

“Well in a way I am not surprised because di way Belize di go right now, dah anybody turn. Once you have young children out there, not even, you on a whole are in danger, once you got children out there they are in danger. Dah anybody, it could be you. It stupid, it senseless.”

And while the mother’s pain, for many, has become relatable, death would once again come knocking at her door.  On December 3rd, 2007, another of her sons would be savagely dispatched.  Sixteen year-old Faron Felix was murdered while running an errand.

Therese Felix [File: December 3rd, 2007]

“I told him go buy habanero for me right on the Boulevard. He said “yes ma, but I have to work in the morning” so he told everybody that he would not stay out late that night. Cause he’s not the type to come in nine, ten o’clock. From six-thirty sometimes he’s in his house. Anyway I sent him to go buy the pepper. Next thing I hear an amount of gunshots.”

That homicide would quickly prompt community action.  Residents of Port Loyola, led by then political candidate Erwin X, took matters into their own hands when they tore down a fence believed to have been the hiding spot where Faron’s killer lurked.

“This is a danger zone. There’s a war going on in Port and so we gotta find a way without talk and politics to address the situation and we’ll work as quickly and as fast as possible to rebuild the chain link fence.”

While the death toll for victims of homicide within the family would subside for a few years, the matriarch and co-founder of Mother’s Organized for Peace passed away in 2008, at the age of forty-six, several months after a third son, Kenroy Bennett, was shot.  Since then, it is arguable whether her surviving children experienced a relapse or even if they simply did not renounce the street life to begin with.  Nonetheless, a fourth son, Terry Felix, would also be targeted by his  enemies a year later, followed by a fifth, Ryan Bennett, in separate incidents.

Terry Felix

“I was on Faber’s Road in front of the Chiney man across from Excelsior when a gunman just stopped and open fire on me and like three more person. But only me and another person got shot. I got shot in my hip, the next person got shot in his foot.”

And all of that systematic bloodshed has culminated in this weekend’s murder.  Its cause unrelated to events of the past, as it is widely speculated that a recent misunderstanding involving Feeshia’s brothers may have triggered the deadly reprisal.

Alden Dawson

Supt. Alden Dawson, Eastern Division

“We believe that it stemmed from some misunderstanding with the brother and some other person earlier, prior to this shooting where they were engaged in some misunderstanding and somebody caused injury to somebody.  We believe it might be the same person who went back to the house and just opened fire on the house, not necessarily with the intent to kill the young lady but she was inside and the bullet did hit the walls, causing the death of this young lady.”

Her bloodstained mattress, the holes in the fence and window are all reminders of a vicious cycle.

Raphael Martinez

“Police have since recovered ten, nine millimeter shells from the street in front of the house.  Two slugs were also retrieved from inside the house and the body of Feeshia Felix was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 3:57 in the morning.”

Here and in China is called KARMA.

  3. Genotu Rembiuos says:

Lets us pray for Belize, please let us do ourselves a good for Heaven`s sake, please pray for Belize.
    Psalm 103
    Of David.

    1 Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

    6 The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
15 The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18 with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.

19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Praise the Lord, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
    who obey his word.
21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.
22 Praise the Lord, all his works
    everywhere in his dominion.

    Praise the Lord, my soul.

Is God not the creator of life no more that these shooters can just take a life as they choose. Why have we come to so much hate that we don’t care for our won people. Live and let live. Please take a step back and see what you are doing to our future. I feel for you Ms. Felix, i am so sorry for the heart ach our children have caused to you. I say our children because thats what they are. Urs, the Ministers, The Government, etc children. all ours.

  10. Earl Grey says:

WHEN WILL THIS SENSELESS VIOLENCE STOP?????????????
    WHEN….

  11. sesational says:

RIP feesh i miss you more than words could say.

  12. BZNinCALI says:

Believing that this is Karma is an illusion, a way to deceive ourselves into believing that the victim somehow deserved whatever happened to them.. None of us, regardless of who we are related to deserve to have our lives taken, let alone taken behind someone else’s beef. Feeshia did nothing to deserve this. And who submitted this picture? Her friends and family has a ton on facebook that are far more representative of who she really was. R.I.P. Feesh, you were loved and I know you died knowing that. The last time I saw you, we hugged, we will do so again one day. Love you Baby..

  13. deedee says:

This is so sad, young lady had her whole life ahead of her. This craziness needs to be put under control & stop immediately. This family has endured so much pain to last a lifetime, again they have to bury a love one due to gun violence. My prayers are with the felix family during this terrible time.

  14. Bear says:

There’s a dire lesson here, that gangbangers endanger the lives of everyone around them. I don’t suggest this poor girl was involved at all in her brothers’ antisocial lifestyle — but she paid for it with her life, it appears.

If you have a gangster in your family, KICK HIM OUT OF THE HOUSE for the safety of everyone else!

The sins of the brothers were visited on the sister. So sad. RIP.

  15. egghead says:

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN, TO tell u the truth, I am very scared of moving back or even visiting Belize with my family. This is a damn shame and disgrace to see what this beautiful country became. Shame on the GOB. Something needs to be done and quickly because these low life thugs is ruining this place.

  16. Eye in the Sky says:

Sounds like Belize is in a Civil War.

  17. Storm says:

We all see the problem, what is the cure?

I say that one immediate cure is the death penalty. Gangsters are cowards, but they don’t fear the law because it is like a toothless tiger today.

We need to get out of the Caribbean court and have the final say on punishing our killers right here, where they do their killing.

It’s immoral to let murderers live among us. And suicidal.

  18. Dolo King Asiatic says:

Someone asked what else can we do. Well, we have to teach the kids love and demand that they respect themselves and each other. We cant change grown men, only they can change themselves but the kids need to be taught that all this hate isnt theirs. Even other peoples kids not just our own babies. We cant continue being silent while our people kill each other

  19. mc says:

Yes, Keep voting for Dean Barrow.. I mean… I’m sad, but You guys deserve this !@#$… You let your government stick a finger in your faces and tell you`re !@#$ and nobody do anything..

There is no democracy in Belize..

  20. Deep South says:

Just hold on a secon! I’ll never give up on going home and looking forward to the days when I’m living there again. This is because most of what you guys are seeing and hearing is limited to BELIZE CITY (and even there its only within a few areas) not the rest of the country. So I kindly ask to be more reasonable with your comments. I went home and found my mom still living like we grew up, the doors wide open and everyone getting along very well. When there was a sudden rain the lady next door quickly took in her laundry off her clothes linen and sent it over when we got home. Again from those areas in BELIZE CITY, many Belizeans still enjoy a nice and friendly lifestyle.

  21. KeyGal says:

It is very unfortunate to hear that violence in Belize is once again on the rise …. It is very unfortunate that an innocent life was taken.. I don’t know Feeshia but may she RIP and may the Good Lord give her family strength at this difficult time…..

What will the Government of Belize do about the escalating Gun violence …Wondering will they continue to sit back and do nothing and wait for for one of their own family members to get shot up!! Changes need to be made in Belize regarding their Gun Violence problem.. Even if Belizean gov’t were to impose a curfew , will the ratchet criminals abide by it …. All the Violence makes Belize look really bad …. I’m sure it will affect the tourism …one of Belize’s main source of US dollars ….

  22. Around the world says:

All nations in the world have crime and corruption. America, China, Russia and even small countries like Jamaica. When the police go into those gang infested neighborhoods and attempt to capture or arrest the criminals, sometime the police use deadly force because the criminals resist with guns so as a result the criminals die while trying to escape or resist. Then you see their moms on TV saying my son is innocent and it’s the government fault. Think about it, is it really the government who made your son buy fully automatic guns and kill women and kids because they can’t find the brothers who they have business to settle with. Everyone is blaming the government, well it’s time to help ourselves. We all have brothers cousins and family who want to be the next bad man of the city. Well it’s time to make sacrifices so the innocent stop paying for the guilty. Hatteville is open 24hrs a day. PUP nor UDP government can care less what happens in the poor crime infested neighborhoods. Live by the gun die by the gun.

  23. Around the world says:

Stop blaming the government. Gang violence spreading all over. Too much drugs.

  24. 6acreisland says:

Belize is NOT in a civil war! No matter how the media tries to sugar coat it, this is gang violence plain and simple. Of course the family is devastated, as anyone’s would be. But is it all that surprising??? This was a family of Gang Bangers!! Duh!
The real tragedy here is that everyone outside Belize (the country) thinks that references to “Belize” (the CITY) is the same thing.

Note to the outside world: Belize City is NOT the same as the rest of the country! Belize City is a dumpy 3rd World city that is not indicative of the rest of the country!! Belize is a wonderful country that is safe and beautiful, but Belize City is a nasty 3rd world town ignored by its Government.

I’m sorry to sound like I’m blaming the victim here but lets be honest about the situation. This family was deeply involved in gang activity.

The REST OF BELIZE is a terrific country to see. Incomparably beautiful. Very safe. With the friendliest of people.

  25. sensational says:
