Shot in front of his house

Raphael Martinez

Two other persons were shot on Sunday and managed to survive. The two victims had the unfortunate coincidence of being shot where they felt safest; that is in front of their homes. Police Press Officer Raphael Martinez filled in the media on the details.

“On Sunday the sixth of January 2013 at about 9:35 in the morning, Police visited a residence on Flamboyant Street in Belize City where they saw twenty-five year old Justin Richards suffering from an apparent gunshot wounds to the lower back. Initial investigation revealed that on the same date, Justin was in front of his home when two dark complexion males on bicycle rode pass him one of whom fired several shots at him causing his injuries. At this time police are investigating this incident.”

“Measures that are put in place most of the times it will have a certain effect after which the effect may die away or be refused. I can tell you for one that the initiatives that we did with the crime ridden areas that has worked. For the last two months at least we found a number of incidents had fallen in specific areas where these were implemented. Now of course the city is made up of several areas and if you look at the shooting incidents, we’ve had shooting incidents in different areas; we have had the murder in different areas. Now the Police Department, we must always be flexible in what we do and the challenge lies in where we need to put our preventative patrols, etc. but everything must come to bare: the investigation, the prosecution of these crimes, the kind of preventative patrols that we do, the operational strategies that we do; all of these things must come together for things to improve. And the challenges in the City is one of the biggest I’ve see because one of it has to do with the cooperation of the general public. Many times we do get information like you the media have highlighted to us: you’ve heard this on the street; you’ve heard this information. We do get these information, but at the end of the day, we need the public to come forward and say I am willing to assist the Police Department.”
