Goal! Football highlights on Sports Monday

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this 1st delivery of Sports Monday for 2013.

The Belize National Football Team opened the new year with a flurry as they hosted Tigrillos of Chetumal Mexico on Friday in which they overwhelmed the visitors in a 7-zip blast and then yesterday inside the F.F.B. Stadium they took on Platence a professional ballclub from inside Honduras. In the opening minutes, this gives and so between Harrison “Kafu” Roches and Deon McCauley, appears full with promise until the Honduran goalkeeper successfully intervenes. In fact people, Belize should have had a quick opening goal when Everal Trapp sets Trevor Lennon on this run that should have produced the desired result instead he is robbed by Albert Centeno. One thing for sure, Platence always appears dangerous on the set piece and this corner kick from Christian Palau spelled danger until Woodrow West comes up with the necessary touch. If you don’t believe well watch Marvin Vallecillo trigger this set piece from outside the 18 that forces West to do his thing in goal. We’re some 32 minutes in when Kafu Roches splits the defense with this splice to the ever deadly Deon McCauley and just like that belie goes up 1-zip thanks to our most prolific goal scorer.

With the rain falling, Belize looks for more as McCauley turns provider for Trevor Lennon who for a 2nd time in 1st half play fails to hit the target.  Just before the half expires, Platence launches this effort in search of the equalizer when Jerrick Diaz Matute who keeps this ball alive to Yester Valle. Valle forces the ball past West who is rescued by Elroy Smith. After intermission, the ballgame tightens so Marvin Vallecillo sends this set piece into the boy and the subsequent header forces a rise out of Woodrow West. The visitors now assume the role of protagonist as Marcos Rodriguez picks out John Perez whose header nibs the near upright. Nevertheless, the pressure continues to count when John Perez turns on this ball which finds West at the right place at the right time. Team Belize tries to get something going when Andres Makin Jr. looks for Harrison Roches who is denied by Albert Centeno’s intervention.

Folks, it’s another big time save from goalkeeper West when Yester Valle fires from right on top the box. Valle gets another chance to tie the score for Platence on this nice move, but again he is denied by MVP West. Meanwhile, Belize has a shot at doubling the lead when Cristobal Gilharry sets up Ashley Torres with this wonderful pass only to see the striker fail from inside the danger zone. Still our national team holds on to the 1-zip Win making it 2 wins in a row over the weekend. On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. inside the F.F.B. Stadium, the National Team goes up against the 1st PLB Champions, the Belmopan Bandits.

In other football news over the weekend, football in Belize hosted Omega Football Team of Los Angeles who handed Millennium Girls of Belize City a 5-zip blast and then blanked Griga Girls 3-nil. On Saturday night, Esperanza faced Omega inside the Norman Broaster and we join the action with the visitors up 1 to nothing. The Esperanza Girls look for the equalizer when Kimberly Perez shoots at the far corner; the loose ball reaches Cynthia Salazar and yes we are tied at 1-apiece. The visitors then get a chance to pull ahead again on this center into the box but Carly Gustafson fails to make the connection. Omega’s Estelle Esperanza, who scored in the 2 previous matches should have given her team the lead here, but comes up empty on this try from pointblank range. So we go to 2nd half and Carly Gustafson tries to break the deadlock with this grass head burner that inches outside the far upright. We now find Estelle looking for the lead and her 1st attempt is punched out by the goalkeeper but its right back to Estelle who makes it a 2-1 and can say she scored in every match here in the Jewel. Esperanza looks to reply off this set piece and Nataki Alvarez almost gets the job done until the goalkeeper gets a necessary finger on it. Meanwhile, Sausha Weznuki kicks down Nataki Alvarez inside the box and the referee gives her a yellow card plus awards a penalty kick. Esperanza sends for Abby Holliday and she does not disappoint as Esperanza holds Omega to 2 all stalemate.

In cycling news, the Weekend Warriors New Year’s Race that left Orange Walk Town Hall for M&M Engineering here in Belize City found 23 A class riders and 26 B class in hot pursuit of the Big W. We catch up on the A class on their way to the finish line and we prepare for a monster field sprint as the pelathon remains compact. Now here’s the sprint to the tape and its barney Brown of Scotia Bank assuming command and he beats out Dean Belisle of BCB/FT Williams, while Warren Coye of Santinos round out the top 2. Ernest Meighan and jack Sutherland finish 4th and 5th respectively. In the B class, Daniel Cano of M&M Engineering got top honors forcing Nehru Gilharry into 2nd and Jim Scott into 3rd. at the C Class level, it was Dennis McKoy of Truckers Posse with the Win while Clinton  Abraham and Ian Abraham finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
