Shot 4 times and survives

Paul Alvarez

There was a shooting during the heavy rains on Thursday night. It happened on Lovely Lane off Victoria Street and could have ended fatally for the victim had he not hidden behind a rack of water bottles. Paul Alvarez braved the downpour to purchase Boledo when he came under attack; at least four bullets found their mark on him. The gunman has been detained. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

A near-fatal shooting sometime around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday has left twenty year-old Paul Alvarez Jr. recovering from multiple injuries at the KHMH.  Alvarez had just left his home in the Pickstock Street tenement to purchase Boledo numbers at Ming Ming Shop when he came under fire by a gunman, later identified as Oscar Usher.  Despite his attempt to take cover behind a rack of five gallon water bottles, Alvarez was wounded in the right hand, right armpit, as well as the right side of his back.  It is reported that both men were involved in an altercation earlier that day in the vicinity of the Supreme Court Building.  According to Alvarez’s mother, who spoke with News Five off-record, he confessed to her that, along with another individual, he physically assaulted Usher after he threw a bottle at them while washing a vehicle.

Usher reportedly waylaid Alvarez under the driving rain later that night, as he walked into the store, before unleashing a torrent of nine millimeter rounds at him.  In the wake of the shooting a friend immediately came to Alvarez’s aid, carrying him by shoulder into the housing project.  His mother, upon learning that he had been shot, summoned a vehicle to transport him to the hospital.  As many as eight expended shells, two live rounds and a slug were later retrieved by Scenes of Crime personnel from in front of the store.  Usher, believed to be one of two men wanted by police in connection with the incident, is a resident of Yorke Street.  Police, we understand, had recommended that Alvarez and his friend pursue court action against Usher, however, they both declined.  Usher’s accomplice, meanwhile, remains at large. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

Alvarez has had previous run-ins with the law, but his family is not certain about the motive for the specific argument with Usher.

It appears Usher is a coward and a would-be killer. He failed, bit his intent was deadly — the law should call for hanging attempted murderers. For now, let him stay in prison ’til he rots.
