Will there be justice for slain toddler?

Kaylee Burgess

It is four months since baby Kaylee Burgess was murdered; her body was found in a bucket in the yard of her grandmother’s house in Ladyville on September fifth. It was a tumultuous time because her mother and father were feuding and the baby’s murder was staged as a drowning. Kaylee was in the care of her aunt when she died tragically; no one has ever been charged. Tonight her mother tells Duane Moody that she has not been in peace since the awful death of her daughter.

Deidra Pratt, Mother of Deceased Baby

“Nothing, nothing. Exactly nothing noh happen dah like dehn done close my daughter case; dehn done give up.”

Duane Moody, Reporting

Nothing has happened to solve the murder of Kaylee Burgess, says the mother of one year eleven month old toddler, who was killed just two days before her second birthday, on September seventh last year. On the night of September fifth, the lifeless body of baby Kaylee was put inside a bucket in the back yard of the family house—to look like a drowning. But an autopsy on baby Kaylee later revealed that she was murdered. Since the shocking discovery, the file appears to have been placed in the archives.

Deidra Pratt

“When yo go dah the station, nobody noh want see yo; noboy noh want talk to yo. All they got fi tell yo, the case file deh dah the DPP; it’s up to the DPP. When yo call the DPP, they don’t have enough evidence and so it just gone cold.”

Saphira Pratt

Baby Kaylee was in the care of her aunt, Saphira Pratt when she was killed. Saphira along with several other persons including: Saphira’s boyfriend, Donovan Lozano and her uncle, Gabriel Mejia Senior; have been detained for questioning. And despite evidence brought forward to the police, charges have still not been levied against anyone.

Duane Moody

“Your sister was detained, her boyfriend was detained; several other persons from your family was detained and released. What’s happening? Somebody from that house had to know something about what happened.”

“Duane you know from the bottom of my heart, I do believe that they have enough evidence to charge somebody but ina this world dah noh weh yo know, dah who yo know. That’s why nothing noh get done to my sister and her boyfriend. I mean come on, they have enough evidence; they have wah statement ah wah minor weh say the name of who do it, the action ah how dehn put my daughter ina the bucket of water and why dehn do it. but dehn say that how it noh admissible ina the court because dah wah minor and they can’t put the minor on the stand.”

Less than a week after the murder, Pratt moved out of her mother’s house and relocated to La Milpa Area in Ladyville. Saturday will make four months since baby Kaylee’s life was taken, but an emotional Pratt says she is still hurting the loss of her second child.

Deidra Pratt

“Ih hard because I really miss Kaelee and I couldn’t even give she wah Christmas gift. My son always asks for my baby. Any time he hear anybody say her name, he could say that Kaelee get hurt, Kaelee the sleep and I know I will have to live with that for the rest of my life knowing that my family member neva give my daughter wah chance ina life—neva even make ih see ih two year old birthday. I have to live with that every day.”

Neither has she spoken with her family.

Deidra Pratt

“The Monday I moved out and I neva look back. Like I tell everybody, dah me and KJ and Karice against this whole world. I have no one by my side. Only me sit down at night and hug my two baby dehn and cry fi Kaelee.  Dehn feel like dehn done get away from it. But like weh everybody she, leave everything ina god hands because nowadays ih noh di take two three four years for thing to happen; it happens right away.  I think the adult dah dah household should take up her responsibility and advice my sister and whosoever had to do with my daughter death fi come forward make I feel a peace ina my life because they will never be at peace. They will never be at peace because kaelee raised up ina that house and Kaelee gone ina that house also.”

Why anyone would want to take the life of baby Kaylee, is still a lingering question.  Duane Moody for News Five.

The way the system is set up is unbelievable! I am 19, i don,t have a child but i could imagine the pain that this woman is feeling. The police aren’t doing their jobs and government well……. hopeless case! We have problems when foreigners step in and try to take over but i honestly believe that this country would be lead better if an outsider takes it over. directed to>>>>>(Prime Minister)

  2. Storm says:

We have a new ComPol, we have a new head of Special Branch — hopefully they will bring this heinous case out of archives and get justice for the baby.

The whole family seems to condone this murder, there is no moral doubt that they know which one of them committed this murder. A curse upon them all.

    Death to baby-killers.
