Major shakeup in police top brass

Allen Whylie

Just before news time, major changes were announced by the Ministry of National Security to the high command of the police force. Firstly, the ministry says this will bring about greater efficiency. The most substantive changes include the promotion of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie to Acting Commissioner of Police, replacing David Henderson who now takes up the post of Director of the National Forensic Science Service. Marco Vidal, who has been heading the Gang Suppression Unit and whose removal had been rumoured for some times, is being transferred as head of the Special Branch but a replacement has not been named. Other changes include that Assistant Commissioner of Police Elodio Aragon Junior is promoted to Acting Deputy Commissioner with additional responsibility for Operations. He leaves the post of Officer Commanding Eastern Division, which is being assumed by ACP Miguel Segura who moves from Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch.

Elodio Aragon Jr.

Senior Superintendent Miguel Guzman moves to the Police Headquarters in Belmopan on what is referred to as a special assignment. Desiree Philips and Marlon Allen are appointed as Deputy O.C.s of the Eastern Division while Superintendent Arnold and ASP Christopher Noble are also being deployed to that division.  Assistant Superintendent Vienne Robinson moves from Coastal Executive Officer to the Eastern Division and is replaced by Assistant Superintendent Luis Castellanos. And Acting Assistant Commissioner Russell Blackett will Head the National Crimes Investigation Branch. The changeover of the command of the Police Department on January ninth while the transfers will follow on the fourteenth.

I’ve been impressed by Whylie most of the time, so I hope for the best — meaning increased operations against the gangs wherever they are found, and hopefully an emphasis on improving police training, professionalism, and pay from the ground up.

I’ve read about a new movie coming out in the States soon called “Gangster Squad,” supposedly based on an actual elite unit in the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1950s to go after organized crime. I dream of such a crack unit being formed in the Jewel, our own Untouchables, to go after any and all criminals. Maybe Commissioner Whylie can look into that possibility.

  2. jack says:

Who will be promoted to head of the bribery and passport selling department?

  5. smaci says:

I think that changes needs to be made at the corrupted immigration and customs dept. too. Cause their corruption contributes to the crimes too.

  6. rod says:

they can do all the shoveling thay want but until this corrupt pm and gov. are out of office nothing will change only smoke and mirrors if this is still fooling the belizean people then unu really stupid fu true and deserve whey unu get. guan judas guan

Immigration and customs as we know it should be closed entirely, and let the BDF take over and run it honestly. Who enters the country is a matter of national security, anyway, so it makes sense to entrust it to the military. Maybe we can bring back a retired commander of BDF to run it.

  8. ceo says:

The politicians are making these changes?

The main reason why there is incompetence in the ranks is because our police department is just an extension of which ever government is in control. The police department needs to be independent of political influence. They need to learn the laws of the country and enforce the them.

When they give an exam promote from the highest score. The last time they gave an exam the Minister promoted who ever he wanted: a loke! Cut the crap!

By the way Rod and his crowd are guilty of the same things he preaches about now., and they were as corrupt!

  9. Young Gial says:

I hope now that Mr. Whiley dah new commissioner, he noh got his wife or partner di interfere ina the police work. Cuz a few months back his girl mi involve in getting some police officers on interdiction, who knows what happened to them…..hope it is not a preview or what’s to come in the Department. If that is the case, this move was dumb.

  10. tanya says:

so stupid that doesn’t make any sense! If they are so corrupt do you think the BDF will be less corrupt?

  11. egghead says:

I don’t understand the shakeup. It looks like they just shuffled around the crooks and give them a better position.

  12. Eye in the Sky says:

David Henderson who now takes up the post of Director of the National Forensic Science Service
Lets hope that he does not tamper with the Jasmine Lowe murder/rape evidence that his stepson Bert committed.
