Spirit of Christmas, K.H.M.H. receives infant warmer

It’s the season of giving and for the second time this week, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital has received the latest medical technology to boost their services. On Tuesday, the hospital received five VeinViewers from the Hope Presbyterian Church of Memphis, Tennessee valued at twenty-five thousand dollars each. And today, another donation courtesy of the Spring family from the U.S. was handed over. The infant warmer or baby resusciter, valued at approximately fifteen thousand dollars was donated to the neonatal unit of the K.H.M.H. Three year and a half years ago, the Springs were at the institution with their very ill infant, Thomas Spring, who was born premature. After almost a month at the K.H.M.H. without access to the necessary technology, Thomas passed away. And now the Springs are trying to prevent other deaths with their donation.

Dr. Cecilio Eck, Pediatrician

“This is three years in the making. We’ve been through several different people; a lot of red tape I call it, to eventually get the infant warmer here. It is a very necessary piece of equipment in the hospital. We do have a few more, but an additional one will go a long way towards serving our kids in the country.”

“About three and a half years ago, our son ended up here and he was born prematurely and the doctors did everything that they could. He struggled for nearly thirty days and he ended up passing away and everyone deals with grief like that and after getting hold of our emotions, we spoke about how can something good come out of this tragedy.”

“In lieu of having friends and family donate flowers or anything like that, we decided wouldn’t it be great if we could raise a little money and get the hospital some supplies they need. There are very hardworking doctors and nurses here, but unfortunately they are working under challenging circumstances and they need help with supplies and equipment. And we had such an outpouring from all around the world that we were able to raise enough money to purchase the infant warmer which was similar to what our son needed when he came here.”

“The pretty name is an infant resusciter and what it is literally a bed that has access to all three sides to the baby and above it all is a warmer that can keep heat on the baby while the baby is being resuscitated. It usually is used often after babies are delivered for us to resuscitate them and help them to breathe initially.”

Many premature babies are never given a chance to make it out of the hospital. Because there are no incubators, the babies are left to die. They are put on a table or directly in the trash

  3. infant-warmer says:

In the early days these babies don’t have body fat to regulate their temperature — they die or have long term health problems because the rest of the organs don’t develop properly,
