Joseph Stamp Romero

Start your weekend right with Channel Five’s Christmas Spectacular at the Bliss tonight. It’s also the final night of Gimme Five, which means you’re in for great performances and the biggest giveaways of the week.  The grand prize is two round trip tickets to the US and a thousand dollars in cash while door prizes include a Kindle reader and a Sankey stove. Then on Saturday night, the National Institute of Culture and History is celebrating the life of Belizean musical icon, the late Wilfred Peters. The second annual Mista Peetaz Bruk Dong Bram is taking place from three in the afternoon and runs until two o’clock Sunday morning. There will be activities for the entire family, including a real Kriol style dance to end the night. Joseph Stamp Romero, the Creative Arts Development Officer spoke to News Five about the lineup for the day.

“This Saturday we have the Mr. Peetaz Bruk Dong Bram and if you might remember we use to have a Mr. Peetaz Bruk Dong Competition. While we don’t intend to try to substitute one for the other, it’s certainly a way to keep Bruk Dong alive. So I look at it as a three part attraction for this weekend. We have from three to seven [o'clock] we have the family event which will be done with the—in partnership with the Kriol Council. There will be games and storytelling for the kids. From seven to eleven, there’s a concert which is an all star attraction which includes Queen of Bruk Dong Miss Leila Vernon, Sam Harris, Bredda David, Mr. Peetaz Boom and Chime Band. We’re looking forward to seeing how well these artists hold up against the new artists that we have also. We have Nello Player, he’s on the ticket, we have Lisa Alvarez who is being featured by Sam Harris and there’s also Ernestine Carballo.  And then from eleven to two a.m. we have a dance Bain style bramming down until two in the morning. And so I look at it as something that everybody don’t want to miss at all. It’s going to be a really great Saturday.”

“And is there an entrance fee?”

Joseph Stamp Romero

“One of the great things about the first part of the show is that from three to seven kids are free, adults are only five dollars. And then from seven until two am, it’s ten dollars but they get two in one; the dance and the concert included in just that ten dollar charge at the gate.”

For those who need transportation, a free bus will be running from Pound Yard to Black Orchid at two, four and five o’clock. Return trips will be made at seven, eleven-thirty and two-thirty a.m.
