Investigation underway on claim that police behaved inappropriately with a Mayflower Street minor

Last Friday, during a police search on Mayflower Street, one of Belize’s hotspots, a thirteen year old student and her grandmother told the media that the minor was strip searched and sexually abused by a female police officer inside her home. The minor claimed that she was sleeping when the officers entered the home, undressed her and abused her. It’s a serious allegation that has drawn the attention of the Police and the Human Services Department. There was no reaction from the Police Department until Tuesday when the Ministry of National Security issued a release saying that while it is deeply concerned about the alleged inappropriate search of the female minor, no complaint was launched. Well since then the grandmother and her granddaughter have recorded statements with the Professional Standards Branch; formerly known as Internal Affairs. And according to the grandmother, Human Services, the Human Rights Commission and the Commissioner of Police have met with them.

“On Tuesday, I went to the Raccoon Street Police Station where an officer of the social development and sergeant or corporal McKenzie—I’m not really sure what was the rank—took a statement from me. But before taking the statement I was greeted by Mister Lovell who spoke to me and told me that he will get it under investigation because he wants to see the proper things done.  I gave the report at Raccoon Street Police station. Yesterday, the Human Services office, Misses Brannon came. We went and picked up Sgt. Armstrong from the Police Department and we went to Universal Health Care to get an examination for my granddaughter. About six o’clock last night, Miss Pitts from the Human Rights Commission came and she also took an interview.”

“During all of this, your granddaughter was there giving a statement as well right?”

Voice of: Grandmother

“Present; both of us giving our statements.”

Duane Moody

“Ma’am recount for us what happened that day when the officers were doing the raid in this area.”

Voice of: Grandmother

“I was inside my house—me and another of my granddaughter. I had a little headache, so I told her that I was going to lay down. I must have dosed off but in between that I heard someone shouting for me and so I hailed my granddaughter and I told her go and see what’s happening. She opened the door and when she got outside, she said gran I noh see nobody only lone police.  One of my grandchild from off the street told me gran police man downstairs. I took two steps down and when I look between he steps I saw a male person standing by the door with gloves on his hand. I asked what are you doing there and he said we are conducting a search.  I didn’t really see the two women police officers until they were approximately two feet from the gate going outside. So I saw my granddaughter coming up the steps trembling. So I asked her what’s the matter and she started to give me the story of what occurred downstairs. I got so vex that I started to rant; I started to curse an all.  Weh dehn do noh right and I noh wah deh yah and I noh wah see dehn come ina my place and harass nobody like that; especially my granddaughter weh thirteen years old.”

According to the grandmother, since Tuesday, the minor has not been attending school because the officer that allegedly fondled her made an appearance at her school.

NOW you know why McAfee is scared.

If the police do this to a young girl IMAGINE what they will do to McAfee.

  2. Storm says:

I hope the truth can be determined. Body cavity searches should be reserved for situations after an arrest, or if there is a specific, factual reason to believe someone is hiding something inside her. Or him.

that officer should be immediately put in jail for years
