New Sporting Complex to replace City Center; is it a reality?

The City Centre in Belize City has not been used for over a year because its dilapidating state would put athletes at risk.  When Belize won silver in the COCABA Basketball games in 2009 in Cancun, the Prime Minister promised the athletes that rebuilding the facility would be a priority. The Mexican President Felipe Calderon was approached and agreed to finance a totally new sporting complex but all that became bogged down when Belize did not meet its commitment to build a facility on the new international bridge spanning Belize and Mexico. The Prime Minister was asked for an update on the status of that project. According to the PM, he will approach the incoming Mexican president and he reiterated the possibility of local funding.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The fact that there is going to be a change of administration; the official position in Mexico is that it is still on, but obviously the details will have to be discussed with the new administration which takes office on December first.”

“But you also said that well you are doubtful that that may happen given the new presidency so you said that the government is prepared to find its own means.”

Dean Barrow

“I don’t know that I’m saying I’m doubtful; I’m saying I am realistic. There is a new administration. I am hopeful that the President Elect, Pena Nieto, will be as forthcoming as president Calderon has been and I have no doubt that generally speaking that will be the case. If there are particular problems with the Civic Center project, then I repeat I am going to get it done locally if I have to by way of a combined syndicated type of financing that will hopefully see S.S.B. involved, G.O.B. and the Belize Telemedia Limited, B.T.L.”

SSB, GOB, and BTL — Hon. Barrow’s own personal piggy banks to spend as he pleases. And the audit proved GOB’s books are incomplete and fraudulent.

I would like a new sports stadium for the sake of national pride, but not with borrowed or misappropriated money. We’re drowning in debt, the nation is referred to as a “failed state,”and there are far more urgent needs that should be met.

Maybe we have to wait a few more years for a new sports center, but let’s do it with private donations that are administered by some person or organization of impeccable integrity.

    Well…..
i want my social security money when i need it! so it better be there!!!

Then, why didn’t GOB hold up their end of the bargain with mexico with building the facility by the border bridge? NO $$$$$$ no deh?

now we already drowning in debt, our credit rating goes lower and lower every few months, interest rates climbing higher….you know if GOB had fixed these problems when they were small, it wouldnt cost so much now.

    a stitch in time….a stitch in time…..

its a shame down right shame …. this govt just push their bukut down the belizean throats and tell them tek that cause da me di run things … little belize for yrs and yrs has no propper sporting facility no propper sporting programes but yet athletes are still rising above the odds to do something with themselves …yet our govt still dont see priority to help them by providing a propper facility … our govt will wait until someone, im talking about a home grown athlete.. rise above all obstacle and become a professional elsewhere making millions then they will want to jump on the band wagon to suck the few dollars like a vampire … mr prime minister cant u see its for the kids , the sporting facilitys is for the kids … not all kids are bless with the talent or ability to be the scientist or lawyer or prime minister ..but i bet they are some that are blessed to be great athletes … some of the same ones bussing guns in the st. give them a chance and u will see… build for them and they will build our society …
