P.M. denies that the U.D.P. sought election funding from McAfee

John McAfee

McAfee, his first brush with the law gained him notoriety in Belize. Back in May 2012, his house in Carmelita was searched by the Gang Suppression Unit. McAfee claimed he was held for long hours and it took the intervention of the US Embassy to get him released. In an interview he gave to News Five, he claimed he had been targeted because he did not provide political campaign funding to the governing party to which the PM also responded today.

“This is clearly a military dictatorship where people are allowed to go and harass citizens based on rumor alone and treat them as if they are guilty before any evidence whatsoever is obtained. It is astonishing, it is beyond belief and I intended not to let this stand. I will not stand idly by to let this happen to me. I promise you. It began, innocently enough, with my refusal to donate to the local political boss of the district where I lived in Orange Walk and I have given at least two million dollars in gifts to the police departments in Orange Walk, San Pedro, Belize City, to the village of Carmelita, the City of Orange Walk. I have started programs to feed children; I’ve helped mothers whose husbands have simply disappeared. I am an old man, I am sixty-six. I have a fair amount of money and not much to do. So I spend it where I think it will do go. And I don’t ever invest in politics. I don’t donate to any political party; I don’t have any political affiliations. I think politics is foolish for a private citizen like myself to engage in—the winning party; you never get your money and the losing party; your on the outs. So I do not. And I refused to donate and the gentleman expected you know, I’ve given a million dollars to the police department, so he should get a huge chunk and he got nothing. Immediately after that, he began—not personality but his aids—began a campaign of calling to the local radio stations on Saturday morning talk shows saying the same thing; “What are we going to do about the white man at the toll bridge? He has all of these security guards. He’s probably involved in illegal activities. Everybody is complaining about him.”   Nothing could be further from the truth. That politician by the way did not get reelected.”

Dean Barrow

“The question regarding contributions has been unanswered by the Party Chairman, has the party approached McAfee for donations?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Absolutely not. I don’t, as I tell you certainly, I have not known who Mr. McAfee is. I’ve heard his name naturally, we all know his name, but I have never met the man; I’ve never spoken to the man. As far as I know, the Party Chairman has never met him; has never spoken to him. I know of no individual in the U.D.P. who ever spoke to Mister McAfee about contributions. This is another of his red herrings to try and construct this platform on the basis on which he can engage in this defamation campaign when he ought to man up and respect our laws and go in and talk to the police.”

McAfee has been a generous contributor to the law enforcement since he moved here in 2008 and as recent as last Friday, he posed with the local San Pedro authorities when he delivered a sizeable donation of equipment to the police.

How is it that this man has donated 2 million to the police force and this pm not know this man doesn’t make any sense but this wouldn’t be the first lie his pm has told.

  2. jaskim says:

Rod, did you even consider the possibility that Mcafee could be lying about donating 2 million dollars to the police force? I read news every day and such a donation if it was legal would have been made public.

So either McAfee is lying about the donation or what he calls donation was in fact an illegal bribe! While I wont put my head on the block for the PM (or any politician for that matter) I think my scenarios are more realistic than yours

“As far as I know, the Party Chairman has never met him; has never spoken to him. I know of no individual in the U.D.P. who ever spoke to Mister McAfee about contributions”. Think about it people. So how the hell he handed over the 2 million dollars gifts then?

  4. Uncle Benji says:

    Rod….. well said.

  5. Buju says:

But rod this is what McAfee is saying, have u seen him donating 2 million dolloars worth of stuff? –
he also said everyone in Belize is malnurished at one time or another and…

That the police will hold him for 30 days and this PM can hand pick a judge to try his case….

But from reading your previous blogs anything someone says about the UDP Government you will believe!

  6. mjm says:

Am not sure if they cut the tail of this stupid Dean monkey Barrow, before releasing him, to public.

His place is in a zoo.

Dean Dog Barrow, after stealing poor peoples money says, he did not seek funding from Mcafee, what a monkey what joke

  7. Annoyed says:

I totally agree with you Rod. The PM has to be lying! This is ridiculous

  8. Storm says:

Sometimes half the truth is the greatest lie. Perhaps Hon. Barrow did not personally meet and shake down McAfee, but it is to be expected that some UDP minions got the job done. When PUP ran GOB, it did the same.

I’m sure that tradition is one of the reasons so few foreign companies want to invest and create jobs here, and why the Jewel lags behind almost every other country in the region in that area. No important company wants to go where there are invisible hands in its pockets.

  9. jungle says:

what a shame barrow is saying that NO BODY IS ABOVE THE LAW, NOT EVEN THE PM PUT HIE ….. HEAD TO JAIL, BECAUSE HE THINKS THAT HE IS THE PM, HE KEEP CHANGEING THE LAWS AND NOT COMPLYING, LOOK AT THIS ONE WITH THE BTL AND BEL, …..

  10. Elgin Martinez says:

All this is as a result of our broken immigration laws and the incompetence of our authorities to do background checks on foreigners migrating to the Jewel.

  11. pup fan Not. says:

  13. WorldPeace says:

Just amazing. The guy donates a HUGE amount of money (yes you CAN see the Coast Guard boat if you don’t believe it), opens several business’s that employs locals, starts and gives to several charities, spends a lot of money to stimulate the economy etc..and yet he’s harrassed by the local authorities, GSU and higher-ups. No wonder investors like myself will NOT be starting business’s there in the future. No suprise the tourist’s are canceling vacations and going elsewhere. No wonder that ex-pats are leaving Belize and taking their money with them. Unfortunately the good people of Belize will suffer and the criminals, corrupt politicians etc will just continue to take from the honest people….so sad.
