3 face immigration offences in the Magistrate’s Court

Vilma Chip Coh

Three persons were before the court for separate immigration offences today. Thirty-six year old businesswoman, Vilma Chip Coh, who is a naturalized Belizean originally from Guatemala, was charged for employing two persons without valid work permits. Chip owns Chica Picante Bar and Lounge on Mosul Street in Belize City.  Allegations are that on November thirteenth, she hired Salvadorian national, Ruth Sari Ireheta, and Honduran Lidia Saldivar, to work at her bar. She wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the two counts, but in mitigation she asked Magistrate Sherigne Rodriguez to impose a fine instead of jail time. Chip was fined two thousand dollars; half to be paid forthwith and the remaining portion by November thirtieth.  The second to be arraigned was businessman, twenty-three year old Anibal Lemus, the son of Salvadoran national Maria Yolanda Enriquez, who was charged only two weeks ago for employing five immigrants who did not have work permits.

Anibal Lemus

Lemus faced the same charge today for illegally employing Maritza Amaya Hernandez at Chi Chi’s Bar on Orange Street. He pleaded guilty and was fined one thousand dollars with the same payment arrangements as Chip. Meanwhile, thirty-three year old Rene Rivera, a Honduran Construction Worker, was today deemed a prohibited immigrant after entering Belize in March and was caught at a construction site in Belama on Tuesday. Authorities say he arrived through the banks of the Mopan River in Benque Viejo and had been applying for naturalization, but it was denied. Magistrate Sherigne Rodriguez granted a removal order after Rivera pleaded guilty to being in the country illegally. He was fined one thousand dollars to be paid forthwith or in default, he will spend six months jail before being deported.

  4. Genotu Rembiuos says:

  5. george says:

There is some much truth in Rembious comment only spanish people being treeated as immigrants when we have so much Nigerians in the country when there was almost none.. and now lets point on the chinese see how much we have.. they are business people yes but why are they not targeted and never asked for work permits or there status in the country. And i can tell you some of them are fresh on arrival on the country and they are working on the stores already when on our laws it says when given visa that no employment either paid or not paid is allowed.

  6. illegal says:

why do we all talk about racism ,this is not racism, this is the fruit of our labor ,this is what the Belizean people want because if you go to any construction site ,who is pushing all the hard work?(emigrants )if you go to all the banana fields ,cane fields, citrus fields ,they are all emigrants !!! why because the belizean pple only want easy work (lazy)and stand by the corners and beg fi di money .

  7. Seletar says:

The comments overlooked the Arabs and East Europeans.

I don’t care the color of a man’s skin or where he was born, but EVERYONE permitted to live in the Jewel must enter legally, with a police check beforehand and a business, trade, or bank account sufficient that they can support themselves here.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

  8. Shakiera LOMONT says:

Your so right Illegal, as my father Joseph Mc Claren said to me when I used to ride in his cart selling burgers and sea weed to construction sites. He tells me ” Baby, I never have to run after the spanish people, they wait to pay me, they run me down to pay me on Fridays. And the creole oh lawd, I have to broke my foot to catch up with them. You always hear tomorrow, next week, end of the month.” And it is so true that the Belizeans like things the easy way. There are exception to every rule, sayings, and culture, all based on the up bringing of a child. In every part of the world no matter shade of color, race, nationality some people like the easy way out. Just that sometimes we think Belize is the only country in the world with lazy have your cake and eat it people.

  9. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALISTO says:

Just like John McAfee when Rod could not blame the government any more for every crime committed in the country, he retreated to the race card.

Rod, in this situation they hired an illegal Salvadorian/Honduran to work at their establishments, and not illegal Nigerians Jamaicans or Haitians.

Our government has long since promoted immigrants as a good thing. See SAID MUSA Ethnicity. Belize is a Nation of Immigrants, and why must I tell you this Rod.

There are hard-working, good immigrants—and then there are the “illegal’s.”, and they are the people I have a problem with.

I don’t want illegal immigrants in my country and I don’t care where they are from.
