Mayflower resident wants police to work in crime area

Sandra Uter says she is not against the search of the area and supports the police’s fight against crime. According to Uter, the situation on mayflower is worsened by criminals who seek refuge in the area to avoid apprehension.

“The only thing I noh do, I noh tell lie pan di police; I noh wah tell lie pan di police.”

Duane Moody

“Other than that, do you support them doing this search?”

Voice of: Sandra Uter

“Yes I do, yes I do.”

Duane Moody

“Why do you think that this is necessary? Are you tired of the crime in Belize in general?”

Voice of: Sandra Uter

Daniel Ortiz

“Miss, this is one of the areas most feared by citizens of Belize because they believe that this neighborhood is invested by gang members. Your family lives through here and we are assuming that you are a law-abiding citizen. How does it affect you that this area is reputed to be so bad?”

Voice of: Sandra Uter

“People turn this fi make it be deh, but this area dah noh weh bad yo noh. Yo have people weh noh even live ina this area, come do dehn crime and then dehn run through ya. So dehn class everybody di same.”

Daniel Ortiz

“If these officers would come in a better way and act appropriately as authorities, would you have a problem with that?”

Voice of: Sandra Uter

“No I would not. I wouldn’t have no problem with them; no kind.”

When we left the area, the police top brass had not arrived to be briefed on the findings of the search which we understand came up empty-handed.

I’m sure she speaks for the majority in the area. Most of them are victims of the criminals, and would help the police as long as the police try fairly to distinguish between the criminals and “regular citizens.”

To paraphrase Mao Tse Tung, the people are the sea, and the criminals are the fish that swim in the sea.

If these areas are so crime ridden why the cops do not have on the propper protective equipment: bullet proof vests?

They can crack down without labling any neighbourhood. Lord knows the entire city has problems with crime. Here is why this does not make much sense:

    1) If it get hard for the crooks to do business where there is the crackdown I am sure they will set up shop in another less patrolled neighbourhood then what?
    2) A cop can search anyone at any time if he has probable cause and in those areas I am sure there is “probable cause” so why the circus?
    3) Our cops are already crooked and these are the guys that we will give additional power to?
