Northern Regional allegations discussed at Medical Congress

There have been persistent reports of allegations of malpractice at the Northern Regional where at least fifteen persons reportedly developed life-threatening complications after surgery. But that’s not an issue that is being discussed at the thirty-first Congress of the Medical and Dental Association which is ongoing at the Bliss Institute. The conference is being attended by a cross-section of stakeholders in the sector and it is aimed at educating practitioners across the healthcare spectrum.  Dr. Joel Cervantes, president of the Belize Medical and Dental Association emphasizes that proper education can prevent the recurrence of claims being brought by patients.

Dr. Joel Cervantes, President, Belize Medical and Dental Association

“This congress started yesterday, it lasts through today and it ends tomorrow, Saturday.  It is very important because we have both national and international speakers.  The Thirty-first Congress of the Medical and Dental Association is very important because we are working hand in hand with the Ministry of Health, our local authorities and with international authorities in trying to upgrade the practice of medicine in Belize.  We’re focusing basically on maternal and child healthcare.”

Isani Cayetano

“[It’s] interesting that you would be discussing this particular topic in light of what’s taking place in Orange Walk with regards to the Northern Regional Hospital situation.  Has this matter been ventilated in the discussions so far?  Have concerns been raised by other practitioners with regards to this issue?”

Dr. Joel Cervantes

“Not really.  Right now what the focus is is the academics behind it.  What we call continuous medical education.  I think the authorities in the Ministry of Health agree totally with us that the way to go forward is to educate our doctors.  The more we educate our general doctors and our specialists the less the chances that we’re going to have people claiming issues in the future.  So we are working together, I must say that.”

Isani Cayetano

“Finally, what are some of the newfound knowledge, per se, that would be imparted here on those who are attending the congress?”

Dr. Joel Cervantes

“Very important.  Medicine and sciences, as such, advances with each passing day.  The speakers we have, both national and international experts, are bringing things that are very important, talking about how to upgrade our healthcare system, both in the public and in the private arena.  People coming and talking to us about upgrading certain tests so that we can identify for example kids that have hearing problems, and as such would have speech problems.  We have doctors that are going to talk about vaccines, which is important.  The latest vaccines so we can keep our population healthy.  Right now we have a speaker in there who is talking about newborns, infections in newborns.  So it’s not only for the doctors because we have a very important quorum of nurses who have arrived and nurses are a very important part, in fact they are the backbone of the health system.  So, the fact that we have nurses and doctors and other health-allied personnel, you know, we have pharmacists and we have a lot of people who are in the health system in there and listening to these talks.  It is important because when they leave here they leave empowered.”

The medical congress concludes on Saturday afternoon.
