Daylight robbery and murder of security guard

Dennis Williams

The Crime Control Council has agreed to support an anti-crime measure which will allow for police to designate crime ridden areas in the Old Capital; most of the hot spots are in the Lake Independence constituency. The Government is going full speed ahead and it is expected that by Friday going into the weekend, the designated areas will be gazetted and police will be able to carry out searches without a warrant. But this morning before noon, in an area far from the designated crime neighborhoods, a cold blooded murder took place. The Three Star Quality Chicken on Vernon Street was targeted for robbery but it turned deadly for an employee who got in the way of the robbers. Duane Moody reports.

Kassian Cadle, Niece of Deceased

“Why they kill my uncle because he is innocent and he does not harm anyone. He is not gang related; nothing to that extent.”

Duane Moody, Reporting

Kassian Cadle and her family are grieving the murder of fifty-four year old Dennis Williams just before noon. Williams was fatally shot by one of at least three men who attempted to rob Three Star Quality Chicken on Vernon Street. The daylight robbery turned murder drew the attention of many and police cordoned off the area to process the scene of the latest homicide in the Old Capital.

Raphael Martinez

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

“At approximately eleven-fifty-seven a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a robbery at the Three Star Quality Chicken establishment at number 46 Vernon Street in Belize City. Reportedly during the process of the robbery, a struggle ensued between an employee of that establishment and one of the robbers carrying a firearm. Allegedly during the struggle the firearm fell out of the hand of the robber and it was quickly picked up by his accomplice who fired the fatal shot.”

Williams affectionately known as “Dicho,” “Mandingo,” or “Bo,” worked at the poultry company for the past ten years. The news of his untimely death came as a shock to the family.

Voice of: Enid Williams, Sister of Deceased

“Only thing I hear from the police when I reach dah the morgue, they said that they have two persons ina custody right now and they will deal with the matter further and that they still deh the investigate and will come contact me back.”

Duane Moody

“Where was he shot?”

Voice of: Enid Williams

“Well according to them ih get shot by ih neck right dah ih work dah Three Star.”

“I got a call from my aunt and I couldn’t believe that it was true. I was asking her, are you serious; are you serious. And she told me to go to the morgue and check and when I got at the morgue I saw that my uncle was there lying, wrapped up in some sheets dead.”

But quick response from various arms of the police department led to the apprehension of at least two persons and the recovery of the suspected murder weapon just moments after the fatal shooting. It appears that in attempting to flee the scene, the robbers threw the gun in this property located at the corner of Wood and Vernon Streets. With both suspects on the ground, police broke the lock on the gate of the unoccupied house and recovered the weapon. Police Press Officer, Raphael Martinez says nothing was stolen from the establishment.

Raphael Martinez

“Quick police response has led to the pursuit and the detention of two Belize City men and the recovery of one nine millimeter pistol.  They were seen running from the scene and the quick police response let to the detention of two men. We should be having a bit more on this tomorrow.”

Marion Ali

“Can you disclose what if anything was stolen?”

Raphael Martinez

“I was told nothing was stolen. Apparently they ran away after the shooting of the employee of that establishment.”

While by all accounts, the incident is being tagged as a botched robbery turned murder, the family is still asking for answers and justice.

Voice of: Enid Williams

“The only thing I wah know why he dah mi dehn target; weh he done to dehn fi kill he because “Dicho” is a very nice persons, caring person. He noh trouble no, nobody; he is a loving person. Nobody he noh trouble—no nobody at all—and we want justice done for him.”

Kassian Cadle

“Right now out here the minister put out lot of work with the gang members to let them stay positive a little, but they went to rob the place. And “Dicho” or “Mandingo” he is not a supervisor, a manger or a boss. He doesn’t have any money so why would they want to let him be their target? They shouldn’t have done that. They don’t know how we feel the family. I remember “Dicho” as someone noisy, loves to dirnk, loves to make a lot of noise and the rail up and the cuss and at the end of the day; he still give you what you want.”

Our footage shows one of the persons detained in connection with the murder being manhandled by the police. Duane Moody for News Five.

The two detained suspects will participate in an identification parade.

First, I hope the robbers are all identified and killed. Even though only one fired the shot, they were all in it together, and should die together for punishment.

Second, the poor victim was brave, but maybe excessively so — most training programs advise giving up the property because it is not worth anyone’s life. I admit to exceptions to that rule, but this situation doesn’t sound like it was one. The robbers were armed, the victim apparently was not.

My prayers for the victim and his family.

In this case, the police department has to conduct a proper investigation in order to provide the DPP w/ sufficient evidence to covict these parasites. For far too long, the police department has botched many investigations, hence leading to known criminal elements walking free from their crimes. What will it take for the GOB to send a serious message to the killers signaling that if they are convicted in the court of law for murder, they will in turn forteit their own lives. A message has to be sent so as to deter some of these future crimes.

What SOCIAL SERVICES … do we have for those who can’t HELP THEMSELVES???

  5. Ben Over B says:

ol’ friend o mine, Mr. Robert from the city used to preach the need to establish a precedence for criminals and i totally support his position: Tie a brick to their feet, load them on a helicopter/plane, and drop them 50 mile out on the Caribbean Sea. Vote Mr Robert for Director of Security Belize City.

Mama swear her son innocent, although he was caught at the scene…

  8. From the West says:

I applaud the police for their actions, and I have no problem them “manhandling” the criminals, as long as they are indeed the ones. The only justice gangsters get in Belize is what the police deliver, Dickie Bradley will be standing by to insure they are never convicted.

  9. Melanie Harrison says:

I knew BO since I was an infant he was a dear friend to my family. He was always real gentleman and always looked after my family. He never caused harm to anyone. A real sense less, devastated crime. May he rest in peace and I hope justice is served to his murderes.

  10. cecilia usher says:

R.I.P. “BO”. I grew up in the area of George & Chuch Sts. where you used to hang out. You were a nice peron. May your soul rest in peace. To your sister, Enid and the rest of your family, you have my condolences.

  11. Southern says:

Get rid of all them. No social programs can help them change their mentality. Just lazy to work n want easy money.
