Medical Council investigating Northern Regional baby deliveries

The Medical Council has met to discuss the allegations of malpractice at the Northern Regional Hospital. From what is reported, the council is asking the Ministry of Health to suspend a doctor who performed surgeries on the affected victims. There are now at least fifteen cases involving allegations of medical malpractice in the maternity unit of the hospital. The reports began surfacing in October and involve serious complaints from women who, along with their newborns, have had life-threatening complications after surgery. Some of the women are considering major law-suits against the hospital.  Just this week, seventeen year old Sally Coh, told News Five that her baby has been left disabled after she had surgery. On Wednesday, a statement was made by the former president of the Belize Medical and Dental Association, who is also an area representative in Orange Walk. Doctor Marco Tulio Mendez is questioning the lack of response from the Ministry of Health and he is asking for the closure of the maternity unit.

“There are certain children that have had severe brain damages which of course is a concern that I have do to the fact that there are many of them. Well I had a meeting with the regional manager whereby she told me that she cannot comment about it and that it was being blown out of proportion. I was really astonished about that. I mean if they are being blown out of proportion, then why not say it publicly? Why not say it to the women that have had the multiple operations; that they have removed their ovaries, their uterus; all of those? Children that have had severe brain damage and even this child that died after having been in the hospital for three days after swallowing the stool in the mother. Tell them that it is just being blown out. It is really chaotic and something has to be done. It is occurring too frequently.”

“All politics aside, it is the health of these children and women that is at stake. You had a statement that you made. Tell us about your recommendations and what you think needs to be done to have this discontinue.”

Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez

“This is not about politics; it is not about power. Really this is about the suffering women from the north and there are many of them who are going through this ordeal. My recommendation is that, and the Minister knows where the problem lies, so what he needs to do is remove the Gyno-obstetrician that is in charge of the department; he is to remove her. And bring in a good, well-trained doctor, now if he cannot bring a well, good-trained doctor, then he is supposed to close the maternity unit services for the northern regional. We don’t want to have more children having brain damage; that is for their entire life. Two right now that it is very clear that they have severe brain damage; we don’t want that. The other time we had the lady that had two ultrasounds with twin pregnancy, immediately, almost the same week; they came out with a press release. Now it has been two weeks almost three weeks and they haven’t said nothing. So as I clearly would tell them; silence is sometimes deafening. We need to know what they are going to do.”

The Belize Medical and Dental Association has called for an inquiry, but up until today, there has been no word from the Ministry of Health on the serious state of affairs at the Northern Regional Hospital.

This report underscores the absurdity of having Hon. Pablo Marin, with no education at all in health, trying to serve as Minister of Health. Let him serve elsewhere, if you must Mr. PM, but put a physician in charge of our health!

As Dr. Mendez wisely said, this is not about politics, it is about health, about LIFE OR DEATH. Put politics aside, Mr. PM, and DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE RIGHT REASON, at least this once.

It is tragic to hear that poor Hon. Marin let one doctor butcher FIFTEEN women and their babies without having a clue what to do!

I strongly believe that mothers, EVERYONE, in fact, across the country should protest in mass until we have a new, qualified Minister of Health.

As for the investigation, let it be completed impartially and thoroughly, and then let the chips fall where they will.

  2. Bear says:

Yes, they must remove the butcher-doctor — BUT DON’T RE-ASSIGN HER TO SOME OTHER HOSPITAL OR CLINIC WHERE SHE CAN CONTINUE HER BUTCHERY ON OTHER UNSUSPECTING PATIENTS!

The doctor should be detained in Belize, not allowed to leave, until the investigations are complete. She may have violated criminal laws or regulations.

  3. Mel says:

Do not put a physician in charge of health. Just because someone is a physician does not mean they will make a good minister of health. Who will check and confirm that and advocate for a patient if doctors are making mistakes and screwing up people’s lives in Belize and then to put a doctor as minster of health?.
I strongly believe there needs to be healthcare reform throughout the entire country of Belize that will clearly define doctor’s and nurses roles such as a nurse practice act and an MD practice act. Should any healthcare employee then break one of these roles their licenses should then be revoke.
Health care reform should be non political and should involve doctors, nurses and consumers
( patients) not political friends and individuals who have no clue as to what goes on.

15 allegations and nothing being done? What are you waiting for PM? You are the leader of our country, the more you stay silent the more the stacks are against u. If you cannot do the job, the honorable thing is to step aside and let someone capable do it. Difficult- I bet so.

  5. Second term Arrogance says:

all these UDP Ministers and cronies are on an all out hussle this term, that is why they prefer to hire foreigners, just foreigners bringing in medicine to Belize, see that four story building on 6 street, rampant hussling they don’t give a damn about 15 butchered women. check who is the chairman of the medical council. and you see what i mean.

  6. Seletar says:

@Mel, you could be half right — the Minister of Health need not literally be a physician, but maybe someone educated in Public Health Administration.

However, that is a far cry from the electrician who is haplessly in charge of Health today. He doesn’t have a clue, and can’t really be expected to have one.

Marin must go, to be replaced by a professional competent in the field.
