Mayas concerned about G.O.B.’s production sharing agreement with Oil Company

Alfonso Cal

According to Alfonso Cal, President of the Toledo Alcaldes Association, concerns have been raised by fellow community leaders regarding the terms of agreement between the Government of Belize and U.S. Capital Energy pertaining to a production sharing agreement.  That concern prompted a letter, written by the association to government, asking for disclosure of that contract.  Cal says that they are still awaiting an official response.

Alfonso Cal, President, Toledo Alcaldes Association

“The Toledo Alcaldes Association is taking care of this matter now. First of all we have gathered our Alcaldes. Saying that we should talk we should discuss this situation that we don’t even know what is happening. We started to meet along with them so we can figure where we are going and what we can do. The committee said that it could be better if we write the G.O.B. and tell them that they never shared their ideas about the U.S. Capital Energy. That’s why we sat down and wrote together and brought our attorney in to listen to the situation that the Alcaldes are not happy about the development ion the community. We wrote G.O.B. three weeks ago and we are waiting and waiting and we asked our attorney if they can’t receive the letter if we can call them to see who is responsible for this. So he is taking the lead and last Friday we had a meeting and asked our attorney if he found out what’s happening with the G.O.B. and he says that he got absolutely no response. So that is why now all the Alcaldes are saying that the next step is that we as a people think that we must go back to court.”

The Maya Leaders Alliance, SATIIM and the Toledo Alcaldes Association anticipate that they will formulate an official position on the way forward within the days ahead.
