U.S. donated x-ray machine to protect office of the P.M. and Kolbe

The Central American Regional Security Initiative (CARSI) has been one outlet through which the United States has assisted Belize’s security forces with equipment worth millions of dollars to protect our borders, whether on land or sea. Today the U.S. Embassy handed over some more equipment to aid in security at the Kolbe Prison, the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building and the top government office, the Sir Edney Cain Administration Building in Belmopan, which houses the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Finance and other Government offices.  Handing over the equipment on behalf of the U.S. Government was Deputy Chief of Mission, Margaret Hawthorne.

Inside the Sir Edney Cain Building in the Capitol, Minister of National Security and the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy cut the ribbon for the latest donation from the U.S. Government. The three Smith Detection X-Ray Inspection Systems and two Walk-Through Detectors valued at three hundred thousand dollars will be strategically posted at key areas in the country.

Margaret Hawthorne, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy.

“The purpose of our ceremony today is to celebrate the sharing of several such pieces of equipment with our Belizean partners. Today the U.S government is very pleased to transfer three high-tech 6040i x-ray machines and two meteor walk through metal detectors valued at approximately one hundred and fifty thousand US dollars. Anyone who has passed through the PGIA or the U.S. Embassy is familiar with these types of machines. These x-ray machine and walk-through metal detectors that the U.S. government is donating are state of the art and feature some of the most current security technology available. Working in concert with the representatives from the Ministry of National Security, we have together selected locations where we think the equipment can be most useful. The first machines are located here at the Sir Edney Cain building. We believe that the introduction of these machines into the building that houses the office of the Prime Minister and other senior government of Belize officials is both necessary and appropriate; their security is of paramount importance. The Belize Central Prison is another critical component of the country’s justice and corrections systems. We hope that the introduction of x-ray machine and a walk through metal detector at the prison will help eliminate contraband including drugs and weapons which can harm prison officials and inmates. The Charles Bartlett Hyde Building in Belize City is another key government of Belize’s building. The introduction of third x-ray machine into this facility in December will be useful in ensuring that Belizean civil servants and citizens are safe and secure while conducting their business.”

When we discussed the locations that we would want to put these, first and foremost was the administration building, Mister Edney Cain Building where most of our leaders and certainly our PM works on a daily basis. I was also very happy to know that the embassy agreed to locate one of these machines at the Charles Bartlett Hyde Administration Building in Belize City. I recall when I was the Minister of Public Service and I had toured that building a couple years ago; that was one of the main concern of our public officers who worked in that building—those of you who know the location—in the heart of one of those crime ridden areas that week just addressed last week with some new action.”

During a demonstration, the x-ray machine was used to detect replicas of guns, knives and improvised explosive devices (IED).

Margaret Hawthorne

“Key component of the U.S. government operations just as it is important to the government of Belize. When we protect our facilities, we protect the people inside them. In fact we have an entire bureau within the state department that focuses on this critical area. As recent tragic events in Libya have demonstrated, protecting government buildings and facilities must remain a top priority in an increasingly unpredictable world. The second key area is the security of national leaders.”

John Saldivar

“Not just that we are protecting our leaders and providing greater security in our administration building, but the symbolism of it is that in our fight against crime it is not just the police; it is not just our security forces that have the responsibility in that fight. Each and every one of us has a responsibility to have a greater consciousness of our personal security in terms of in the case of this building—putting in such a machine, but also in our homes. Being more careful; being more conscious of the need to protect ourselves against those who want to take advantage of our situation and violate our privacy and our property.”

Margaret Hawthorne

“On behalf of Ambassador Thummalapally and the United States Government, we are very pleased that the donation of this security equipment to an important ally will advance our security cooperation with the government of Belize and we look forward to continuing this partnership with you as we move forward together to meet the challenges that lie ahead.”

Now that our nation’s leaders will be protected, it is time for the police to protect the streets. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Thanks to the generosity of the States for this security equipment. I’m not sure these are the three best or most important places in the country to put them, but it’s a beginning. Every little bit helps, if we use it right.

Even in the USA this type of equipment is equal to frisking like what the Israel does to oppressed, stateless Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank. Now it has arrived in Belize. From Gaza and West Bank to airports of the world to tiny Belize has spread the Jewish lobby and connivance. Belize beware of the jewish undercover particularly one that calls himself Bear Jew. Here comes the Police State compliments of USA and it plays right into the nefarious agenda of Barrow. The European Union and USA have turned the the world upside down to placate their murderous treatment to people who converted to Judaism in Europe in WWII. They are trying to use these people to colonize Palestine to use to control the oil flow to their economies. But the Arabs will have none of that so the world is engulfed in hatred and all the BS with security. Maybe we should address theroot cause of the problems in Belize to solve our crime rate and poverty (45 to 54%).

  3. Rod says:

So the pm and ministers protect them selves instead of defending the people of this country from drug dealers and terrorist like at the borders at Guatemala chetumal etc but no again the people of his country mean nothing to this pm and gov they only care and look out for themselves sorrowful pm and gov.

  5. wicho says:

From all that is happening in this country: Low wages, crime, no jobs, all because of the bad governance! The PM know what is happening in this country and that the people are getting frustrated! and like they say ” a hungry man is an angry man”!!!! He is afraid someone walks through his door in anger!! lol!!!! ;)

great! the PM and top politicians are well guarded…and the rest of us what??

  8. Ricky Malthus says:

And now my final word on this topic. The government of the USA provided the best and most advanced technologies to the Apartheid South African to torture and commit the most heinous crime of genocide against the indigenous black population and SWAPO, the freedom fighters. Today this state of the art armaments are unleashed against the Palestinians by the Apartheid regime in Israel. Will they provide Barrow with more arms to save his regime for the balance of his term? Belizeans, stop fighting amongst yourselves and start fighting your common enemy . You will lose what is left of Belize.

  9. Belizean says:

Whoever is against Israel is against God Himself. I believe this is the reason why were under the curse..We should have stood up for Israel, not against…Believe you me Maltus, bad things happen to people against Israel. Oh, were talking about Belize, NOT ISRAEL.

  11. Lucas says:

Many attempts were made against Fidel Castro during the hight of the cold war by the CIA. During one of his discourses, Fidel said to John F. Kennedy: MR. PRESIDENT; NO ONE IS BEYOND REACH. A few days later, president Kennedy was shot in Dallas Texas. Hence the theory that Fidel had something to do with that assesination. Now I say: MR. BARROW; NO ONE ABSOLUTELY NO ONE IS BEYOND REACH.

  12. AKILES says:

Well that is so generous from USA Government, but remenber something. USA never give nothing for free, theirs nothing free in this life. Soon or latter USA Government will want something from our country and the government has to give it for al………l the help or donations that he had been giving to BLZ, just keep it on mind.

  13. Seletar says:

How does this article spawn tirades of anti-Semitism? Some twisted comments here today.

  14. The Man says:

What a lot of Baloney. USA at it again. Belize, be careful. Actually a much better place would have been on Albert Street; have all residents pass through these LOL. I guess we will not maintain these anyway, like everything else for GOB that is gimme thank you. So no worries, none of these will be in existence within 18 to 24 months from now because of a lack of maintenance.
