Amazing weekend sporting highlights with James Adderley

James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is sports Monday.

Week 10 of the PLB Season saw a monster showdown inside the Isidiro Beaton Stadium on Saturday night as Police United played host to their arch-rivals Placencia Assassins as both teams looked to rebound after both suffered losses on the last schedule. Indeed it was a perfect start for Placencia when poor clearance by the Police Defence gives possession to Gary Young whose right foot bombed left Charlie Slusher in the role of onlooker as the visitors take a 1-sip lead some 14 minutes in. The Assassins continue to force the issue and should have doubled the lead when Dellon Torres sends this ball into the box only to see the header by Bernard Linares crash into the far upright.

The Police finally mount some offense when Danny Jimenez fires from distance only to go wide off the target. In the meantime, the visitors get another loose ball inside the box which gives Bernard Linares a chance he should have done better with. Off this pass from Gary Young, Rollin Burgess shoots at goal from an acute angle and believe me folks, he wasn’t too far off. For certain, Charlie Slusher finds himself under severe pressure in 1st half and when he leaves his line on this corner kick he fails to make contact with the ball but is rescued by a defensive clearance. Folks we’re four minutes into 2nd half when this cruel clash of bodies between Evan Mariano and Jason Kelly gives possession to Amin August who does everything right except get the Police on to the scoreboard.

On the next press, the Police get help from the Placencia captain, Dalton Eiley who concedes a penalty by pushing down Evan Mariano inside the 18. Orlando Jimenez gets the call for the Police and goalkeeper, Elias Pelayo gets sent in the wrong direction as Police ties the ballgame at 1-apiece. Placencia looks to regain the lead when Zerrick Torres fires this left foot at goal only to see Charlie Slusher come up with the save. Around the 56th minute, Danny Jimenez looks to become a hero for the police when he launches the power shot from long distance that crashes into the far upright; would have been a spectacular goal as Pelayo was already beaten. However, here’s the real hero of the ballgame. At the 83rd minute, Devon Makin is turned back by solid Placencia defense; the loose ball reaches Evan Mariano who doesn’t get much on this shot—but somehow miraculously it beats Elias Pelayo. Police United as a result comes up with a big time 2-1 big Win over the Placencia Assassins.

In other results from over the weekend; the RG City Boys jolted Paradise Freedom Fighters in a 3-2 affair. FC Belize and Belmopan Bandits battled to a scoreless stalemate at the MCC Grounds. San Pedro Sea Dogs dropped San Felipe 3-1. Out West, Verdes and San Ignacio United drew nil-nil and out at Orange Walk, the B.D.F. was up 3-zip over Juventus at the half when the proceedings was halted due to rain. This match is expected to be concluded this Wednesday or Thursday so stay tuned. Looking to the weekend, on Saturday; San Ignacio will host RG City Boys and Belmopan Bandits will be at home against Juventus. On Sunday, San Felipe Barcelona plays host to the B.D.F.; the Police faces Verdes at Belmopan; San Pedro takes on FC Belize at the Barracks and Placencia Assassins will be at home to take on Paradise Freedom Fighters.

Turning to the basketball scene, play in the BDBA firms division at Bird’s Isle Friday saw B.T.L. battle Bowen & Bowen. The telephone company comes out and quickly establishes its dominance as Lupito Acosta finds Edward Thompson with this long pass who strikes for 2 of his 14 game points. Off this missed shot from Milton Flores, Martin Sheran grabs the rebound to make good the put back for 2 of his 11 points for Bowen & Bowen. The man play between Acosta and Thompson again leads to 2 points and at the end of the 1st; B.T.L. is up by 8 points. In the 2nd quarter, Milton Flores raises up in the paint for 2 of his 8 points. At the other end, Thompson turns provider for Lupito Acosta who lays it up for 2 of his 16 points. Acosta then comes back with this three from way beyond the arc. Give some props to Steve who keeps his team in the game with this monster 3. Steve would finish with a team high 18 points. Nevertheless, at the half, B.T.L. leads Bowen & Bowen 34 to 25. In the 3rd quarter, B.T.L. gets even busier. Acosta deals to Lennox Cayetano who banks it home for 2 of his game high 19 points to go along with the game high of 20 rebounds he posted in this outing. For certain, Bowen & Bowen has no answer for Lennox Cayetano who comes up with the big tip in. It’s more Lennox Cayetano when Winston Santos misses this jumper; he comes up with yet another put back. B.T.L. would go on to post the 68 to 46 big Win in this outing.

In other results: Atlantic Bank burned BWSL 51 to 50; Central Bank shook up Airport 64 to 58; B.T.L. prevailed over Smart 45 to 43; Port of Belize beat Belize Bank 53 to 46; Tiger Sharks got past Tuff E’Nuff 77 to 72 and Belize Bank outlasted Cellular World 66 to 59.

On the cycling scene, Casa’s 42 Mile Saturday race saw 26 riders suit for the start at Leslie’s Imports as they take off en route to the Boom road Junction and back. At the Hattieville roundabout, these 5 riders have jumped to the lead. However, the main pelathon is still within striking distance. At the turn around point, the 5-man lead has been extended to 8. Around Kolby Foundation, the lead is back to 6. And here’s a look at the chase bunch coming hard. At Burton Bridge, we find this trio in the lead as the finish line gets closer. It’s Byron Pope, Mark Staine and Quinton Hamilton in control. The trio approached the finish line and immediately Pope jumps into action; Quinton Hamilton hangs on to his wheel while Mark Staine free wheels in. it’s Pope of Benny’s with the Win; unattached Quinton Hamilton takes 2nd and Mark Staine of Benny’s rolls in for 3rd. Junior rider, Joel Borland of Indeco takes 4th place while Allen Castillo also of Benny’s rounds out the top 5.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
