B.D.F. Sports Day with marathons and games for the family

The Belize Defense Force is having its annual sports day on Saturday morning. It’s not your typical sports day since it involves our trained soldiers in a fun family event to which the public is invited. On Saturday the day starts off with marathons and half marathons along the nation’s highways at five-thirty in the morning. And if that is too early for you to participate, Lieutenant Glenroy Fermin told News Five that family sporting events will also be open to members of the public at Price Barracks in Ladyville at nine a.m.

Lt. Glenroy Fermin, Platoon Infantry Commander, B.D.F.

“The B.D.F. sports day; it’s an annual event that we have every year and we try to promote it every year by telling the people out there that we need their assistance and their support. At the end of the day, we just want to invite everyone out to come and have a good time. We have the marathon which starts at five-thirty in the morning—registration at five thirty and the half marathon which starts from the police check point on the Western Highway; goes into Belize City and then up the Northern Highway and to Price Barracks. We have the 10K marathon which starts from Maheias on the Northern Highway and goes allt he way to Price Barracks and then we have the 5K marathon which starts from six and a half miles on the northern highway and goes to Price Barracks. There is a small registration fee of ten dollars for each category of the marathon. There are prizes from first to fifth prizes for all categories and we also have prizes for all categories and we also have prizes for the youngest and oldest person in each category of the race. The finishing line for all these races it at Price Barracks.”

“So people can still just be on the road side and cheer on as the runners go by?”

Lt. Glenroy Fermin

“You can be on the roadside to support all the runners; encourage them—give a little water or a little fresh juice. But you cannot come in and substitute for someone because people will be given a number and with the registration, the number and the name will be there so they have to correspond.”

“Now to get this event across, you do need some sponsorship.”

Lt. Glenroy Fermin

“We have the Holy Redeemer Credit Union as our main sponsor. We want to thank them very much for doing this job that they are doing every year. After all marathon ends, we have the family itself which actually stars at nine a.m. in the morning whereby we have a lot of food on sale, drinks; all kinda fun activities. We have watermelon eating contest where we have family that will come in and compete against each other. It just has to be the B.D.F. family, it just could be somebody that comes from outside to support us or it could be a family from the B.D.F. going against a family that is not of the B.D.F. or something combined. We have lime and spoon, needle and thread; all the games that we used to play in primary school.”

The B.D.F. Sports day starts at nine and ends at five pm on Saturday.
