Northern Regional Hospital has too many post operation complications

When we last reported on the Northern Regional Hospital, the story was about Michel Gonzalez whose ultra sounds and treatment were for the delivery of twins but when she actually gave birth, she was told there was only one baby.  Tonight there is another most disturbing report involving charges of malpractice against the Northern Regional Hospital. From the information we have been piecing together, in the past two months there has been an unprecedented number of patients who have developed life threatening complications after surgeries, most of them are women who have gone to the hospital for childbirth.  The reports say that various routine c-sections have ended in hysterectomies and this month alone, in a span of twenty-four hours, two women suffered hypovolemic shocks after surgery and had to be rushed to the K.H.M.H. for emergency treatment. There is a case of a patient that underwent routine surgery then developed a medical condition called rectovaginal fistulas, causing fecal incontinence. There is another even more serious charge in which it is alleged that a newborn died because of perinatal asphyxia. At last count, ten other newborns suffered sepsis, seizures and meconium aspiration syndrome. A number of affected families are said to be contemplating legal action against the hospital.  The situation is alarming because according to a source, in the previous history of the institution, there have only been a total of six hysterectomies after c-sections but in October alone there were two in less than twenty-four hours. We will follow-up this story with the Medical and Dental Association and Council as well as with the Ministry of Health.

In other words, that hospital is simply filthy — a sewer pit posing as a medical center. Close it down, and punish those who are responsible for the disgraceful conditions there. It sounds to me like some doctors who are in charge should lose their licenses because they are simply dangerous.

all these district hospitals and KHMH as well are cesspools of coruption, foreign doctors, Nicaraguan and Cuban are brought in and given immediate liscense to “practice” in our public hospitals. many times to replace Belizeans doctors who don’t want to follow Ministas orders or those that appear to be too PUP. a transfer to PG is many times used as a threat to force a resignation. the Medical Council which is the body charged to look into these matters is useless as it is headed by the twice rejected at the polls Dr Gough, who to protect his SSB/NHI fat salary does whatever the Minister bids. and so the poor people will continue to die, while the politicians play their games. do you think a commission of inquiry will find this Nicaraguan doctor guilty of negligence when she was personally placed there by the Minister to replace the upstart Belizean dr..

  3. Storm says:

It’s time to close this hospital for protection of the community. And time for some former patients to hire good lawyers.

  4. jose says:

This is really alarming and an action needs to be immediately taken. The media needs to start hunting these medical doctors to hear their side of the story, but the Minister needs to start to give his face or his CEO to see what critical problems they are experiencing at the hospital.

People please wake up!!!!! because the other victim of malpractice can be rite around your corner.

This is the result of moving and getting rid of our own Belizean Doctors to replace them with those inexpercience Nicaraguan Doctors and having a hospital administrator who is acting as regional manager who is qualified to run a hotel not a hospital but since she is the electrician minister of health’s relative, we shouldn’t expect much of both of them may be the minister does not know the difference between hospitality and hospital management …. the sad part of all this is our belizean people are suffering and dieing due to these stupid decision made by this government. I hope the ministry of health step up to the plate and give some damm good answers to the public.

  6. Rhonda White says:

A closer look at the Northern Regional Hospital is urgent. So much mal practice and mismangement is going on its not funny. More importantly our belizean doctors are treated badly by foreign specialists who openly brag that more foreigners can be brought in if our belizeans do not like the way they are treated. These foreign specialists have the ear (or more than the ear) of the Minister of Health. Something is deifnitely not right at that hospital…..an investigation is urgent!!
The Nicaraguan obstetrician is said to be extremely close to the Minister of Health

  7. ashamed says:

How can a wire man be Minister of Health, at all regional Health Meetings, Washington, Geneva, Belize is the laughing stock of the world. a wire man as Minister of Health. in 2012 Belize difinitely can do better.

  8. concerned says:

A full pledged investigation should be done and get rid of those specialists..they are threat to our people.

  9. Hugh says:

Shouldn’t the minister of health be a qualified health personnel with at least a minimal degree (eg) Masters Degree in Health field
