The muscle popping, amino acid enhanced Sports Monday

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Week 7 of the PLB Season brought another week of out of zone play so we headed to Capital City, Belmopan where Police United played host to the A zone front runner FC Belize on Saturday night’s ticket.  On hand to view the proceedings was newly appointed National Team Coach, Leroy Sherrier Lewis of Costa Rica, who is in the process of selecting the talent most suitable for his scheme of things. FC Belize gets the 1st chance to open the scoreboard when Leon Cadle threads the needle to Avian Crawford and the deflection might have allowed Charlie Slusher to handle this ball. At the other end Leon Cadle let’s loose this left foot, but Charlie Slusher is well positioned in goal.

We’re at the 14th minute of play when Danny Jimenez mounts this individual effort off the right side to fire this left foot that finds the far corner to give Police the 1-zip lead. A minute later, this set piece fired by Amin August, headed on by Devon Makin gives the Police the opportunity to double the score only to come away empty-handed after a marvelous save from Glenford Chimilio. At the 43rd minute, Danny Jimenez switches to the left side and then picks out Evan Mariano whose header bounces over the outstretched hands of Glenford Chimilio for the 2-nil score. And the Police fans certainly love it.

So we go to the 2nd half and immediately, Danny Jimenez fires this low cruise missile that is right at the goalkeeper. Folks, this one is all Police United and Amin August does everything right on this play except find the streaking Evan Mariano on the left side. At the 77th minute, this defensive error by FC Belize gives Danny Jimenez another look at goal and he notches his 2nd of the match as Police United goes on to post the 3-zip big W.

In other results from around the league, Paradise Freedom Fighters beat San Pedro Seadogs 3-1; Belmopan Bandits blanked Verdes 2-nil; FC Barcelona dumped San Ignacio 2-1; Placencia Assassins burned the B.D.F. 1-zip and RG City Boys jolted Juventus 2-0. Thus after 7 weeks, the Bandits lead Zone A with 16 points, FC Belize is next with 14, the B.D.F. has 11. Juventus 9, FC Barcelona 5, and San Pedro in the cellar with 4. Over in Zone B, Placencia leads with 16, Police now has 15, Verdes 13, Paradise Freedom Fighters 7, RG City Boys also has 7 and San Ignacio is at the bottom of the standings with 2 points.

Looking to week 8, Saturday night, San Ignacio will host Belmopan and the B.D.F. will be inside the Michael Ashcroft Stadium against Paradise Freedom Fighters. On Sunday, Verdes plays host to FC Belize; San Felipe Barcelona heads to Belmopan for a date with Police; Placencia Assassins will be at home against Juventus and RG Boys gets a visit from San Pedro Seadogs inside the MCC Grounds.

Inter-District play in Week 3 saw Mavericks beat Scorpions 2-1; Napole edged Estrellas 1-nill; Southside bombed Benguche Bad Boys 6-1 and Sunergy got past Benguche 2 to 1. That’s in the south. In the north, it was Progresso over Guinea Grass 2 to 1, San Antonio beat Calcutta 3-2, Brown Bombers downed Madrid by that same score and Hattieville doubled Capital United 2 to 1.

In news from the Smart Mundialito, Ladyville Japan and Jane Usher ended in a scoreless draw, so did Ladyville Jaguars and United Rangers; City Boys Jr. and Yound Stars and St. John Vianney and 3rd World. League lead, Brown Bombers beat Hattieville 2-zip.

In cycling news, the Weekend Warriors presented a 40 mile race yesterday that travelled from Cotton Tree to Leslie’s Imports. Around mile 7, we find Fred Usher and Rigoberto Rivas on the pace being chased by the main pelathon which remains more or less in a compact formation. Another check at the front of the race around mile 5 reveals a new wrinkle—Rivas is gone while Fred Usher is joined by Amir Gonzalez. So we go to the finish and its fresh Fred Usher of Scotia Bank easily claiming the W today. Amir Gonzalez of Truckers hangs on to 2nd while David Pollard of BCB/FT Williams rolls in for 3rd, Jack Sutherland is 4th and Derek Smith rounds out the top 5 overall. Meanwhile, this Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th, the warriors will present TIDE FISH FEST -2 days of racing inside Punta Gorda.

Finally in bodybuilding news, the Belize Body Building Federation presented its annual show at the Bliss Institute Friday night and it brought out a huge crowd. The body figure event featured 3 females vying for the 2012 title in this exciting event. Gina Lovell took the contest in impressive fashion and we say congratulations. Gizelle Diaz took second place and Arlene Welch settled for 3rd. Lornette Young took the female bodybuilder title. Josephine Gault finished 2nd. Now meet the guest performer, Clayton Grinage of Greneda and he does look world class. In the Masters class, male Edward Williams took 3rd. dean Banner flexed himself into 2nd place and the winner is Guy Neal and we say congratulations.

Jose Alvarez took 3rd place in novice class. Eduar Burns picked up 2nd place and congratulations are in order to Leroy Card who took top honors. In the Welder-weight class, it was a battle of Deons: Deon Ortiz settled for 2nd. He had to take a back seat to the massive figure of Deon Danderson. At light heavyweight title, 5 contenders stepped up to prime time. When the decision came down, Deon Banner picked up his 2nd trophy of the night by grabbing 3rd place. Ernest Broaster stepped up to 2nd place and without a doubt, Rico Vellos has the best package of wall to wall muscle to take the title and we say congratulations.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
