CATM, the tourism package in Honduras

Nelly Jerez Caballero

The ninth edition of CATM, the Central American Travel Market, is winding down in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. All Central American countries have been taking part and aggressively promoting their countries as prime tourist destinations with a competitive edge. It is one of the biggest shows in the region which provides avenues to tourism stakeholders to make inroads in Europe, US, Latin America and Asia markets. At last count, one hundred and forty-four tour operators had registered. The Belize Tourism Board and the Belize Tourism Industry Association partnered with this station for coverage of the event. The BTIA’s Efren Perez and Jim Scott as well as the BTB’s Alyssa Carnegie were promoting Belize at the show.  Earlier today, Marleni Cuellar spoke with the Minister of Tourism of Honduras, Nelly Jerez Caballero.  Here is that interview

Nelly Jerez Caballero, Minister of Tourism, Honduras

“The government is playing a role very important in security matters. What goes in the other countries around the world is that Honduras is not a secure area. You’re here in San Pedro Sula, a city that’s been considered like the murder capital of the world. You’re here in San Pedro Sula and you haven’t seen anything of that. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen; yes, it happens. It happens in some small areas like where there are gangs or Maras. Like in Los Angeles, in the U.S.A. for example or in other countries where they have problems also like these type of persons that, that’s their way of living. Like for example here, right now where we are, it’s a very secure area and you’re not gonna see it secure just because there’s a police guy by your side, no. Government is playing a very important role right now and we’re making our laws very, very strong including our police right now are passing through a project that the president has that’s called auditorias, which is like a scanning of them, if they are good guys or they are bad guys, they are getting out of the police and government is taking care of them.”

Marleni Cuellar

“The policies obviously that you make with the police and what not are important here, however, to change the perception of people who haven’t visited Honduras, how do you think you will be able to do that?”

Nelly Jerez Caballero

“Well, by making these kinds of events. For example CATM is a window for our country so you can come here. Right now, thank God it was in Honduras, thank God it was San Pedro Sula because you’re gonna go back to your country and you’re gonna say no, I was in San Pedro Sula, nothing like that happens. So I think that is the best thing that we can do, make more events, try to postulate Honduras in other places so people can come here to these different places and come and see that here in Honduras tourists can come, they can go back to their countries and they can come back with no problem. So these policies, they are very strong. President Lobo is working a lot in those policies because he told us, I need specific tourist areas to be secure and we’re gonna make like a change here and were going to secure these areas.”
