Stephen Lewis murdered during home invasion in Capital

One man from the Dangriga area is detention tonight in connection with the horrific murder of a retired Belizean American, fifty-three year old Robert Stephen Lewis. Lewis and his wife, Ursula, recently relocated to Belize and built their dream home in the Maya Mopan are of Belmopan. The couple was surprised by an armed and masked man, who it is believed knew them well and was able to evade all security measures on the building. After Ursula was bound in the upper flat, Robert’s throat was slashed and he was stabbed multiple times in the lower flat of the building. The gory murder has shaken up the Belmopan community where police say violence is on the rise. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

Belizean Americans Robert Stephen Lewis and his wife Ursula Patnett Lewis built themselves what appears to be a safe haven in the Maya Mopan area of Belmopan. But all the security features on the massive, heavily secured house could not protect them from a single masked man who broke in on Monday morning and savagely murdered Robert. Ursula was tied up in a bedroom on the second floor and could hear her husband’s screams as he was stabbed to death in the theatre room downstairs. Their neighbors also heard the commotion.

“My daughter heard the noise in the night and they woke me up. So I went to see what was happening at my neighbor, Ursula’s house. I saw the woman sitting on the steps and she was crying and screaming for the neighbors. She asked to borrow my cell phone and she called the police on my phone.”

Ursula got out after she managed to untie herself. She had to jump from the upper floor of the house to escape, injuring her shoulder, but by then her Robert was dead.

Supt. Alvan Gentle, O.C., Belmopan Police

“We received information—that was on yesterday’s date, the first—and the police visited a two storey building in the Maya Mopan area, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased; one Robert Stephen Lewis I think he’s a contractor in Belmopan. We found him in the house and the body had multiple stab wounds. He was subsequently transported to the Belmopan hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Delahnie Bain

“And Mr. Lewis’ wife was also injured in the incident?”

Supt. Alvan Gentle

“Yes, from what we understand, she was tied up, she was assaulted and she jumped from the second—from the top floor to downstairs where I believe she received certain injuries.”

But with security cameras, guard dogs in the yard and burglar bars on every door and window; how did the intruder get in? Police are still trying to figure it out.

Supt. Alvan Gentle

“That is the mystery right now, how the person got inside that house. That house is a very strongly, if I may use the word, fortified building as such so we’re looking at it has to be someone who knew how to get in there, someone who might have known the deceased and his wife so to speak. But this is just one option, we’re looking at all the different avenues in respect to this murder. We are still conducting investigations. We haven’t gotten any tangible lead as such to effect an arrest at this moment but we are definitely not giving up. We’re working on it and working on it. We’re doing the best we can’t so to speak. We’re working very seriously and we have hope that we will come to a conclusion.”

Alvan Gentle

The home invasion at the Lewis residence is only incident on the growing list of violent crimes occurring in the capital city. The Officer in Charge, Superintendent Alvan Gentle, says that since he took over Belmopan Police, he has implemented measures to combat the rising crime and he personally goes on special patrols.

Supt. Alvan Gentle

“Instead of just having our regular patrols, we have our daily and more so extra patrols on the weekends with the staff officers, including myself, we come out and do patrols up to ten o’clock in the night and from there another team would take over and that is supplementary to the other patrols that we are obligated to do.  We have also conducted several operations, in fact just Friday—which is more like on a weekly basis, so to speak—just Friday we had an operation targeting criminals, targeting even the supposed gang members that are operating in Belmopan.”

Gentle also suspects that persons are going to Belmopan from other areas to commit offences and then return to their communities, which makes it more difficult to solve some crimes.

Supt. Alvan Gentle

“They tend to run up this side and hide; but not only hide, they come up here and they perpetrate crimes and then they leave and go back so it’s kind of difficult to get a grip of the situation like this. What we have done or what we have been doing as well is to conduct early morning checks on these buses as well; whether are coming or going back, we try as much as possible to discourage these criminals from Belize City and not only Belize City, but from San Ignacio, from Dangriga. People tend to want to use Belmopan as a haven and we’re sending a strong message that Belmopan is not a haven for criminals.”

So far one person has been detained for question while police look for another. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

In their investigations, police have found out that while the house contained many valuables, only a couple hundred dollars in cash were stolen and the culprit was said to have been looking for a firearm.

If the suspects are arrested alive, I hope the police and DPP follow the book, make no foolish errors, and they are convicted. If convicted, they should hang. If CCJ won’t let us enforce our death penalty, then some other country must agree to take our murderers when they get out of prison — we want them dead, and whoever prevents that is morally obliged to take responsibility for them.

It occurs to me that when you build a secure fortress like that — a regrettable near-necessity if you have money in the Jewel — then the workmen who build it can just as easily know how to break into it.

My prayers for the poor man’s soul and his family.

  2. I Belize it says:

There goes the retirement sector of the economy.
But tourism will make up the difference.
Soon the criminals will figure out how to get to the tourists.

  4. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALISTO says:

    Do not retire in Belize.

Belize is truly the most dangerous country to live or visit, you can bet your life on it.

Children, women, and retirees are gunned down, run over, shot, and butchered
Under the PM watch and what is the GOB of Belize doing about any of the murders before this one?

    NOTHING.

  5. Uncle Benji says:

Cameras that don’t work? Anti burglar doors and windows, yet the the thief got in? Something’s afoot with this story……… and it does not make sense.

Death is usually a sad thing; but this is what I call Cruffy at work. Come on, it is just you and your spouse. You build a mansion and splurge on cameras that don’t work?

Cruffy hold onto wa lee money, and Cruffy go crazy. Obviously, this type of showboating will attract bad elements. Bad elements attract bad things.

R.I.P. Mr, Lewis and Godspeed. You are in a better world now.

  6. Joke. says:

Finally they are working. lol What a joke. Not Mr Alvan believes himself.

“We’re working very seriously and we have hope that we will come to a conclusion.”

  7. Rod says:

Its sad. We need more honest Belizean to join the the police force and the BDF so we can have more patrols. I believe all public officers who are working and receiving their pension should not get their pension and those funds and help pay our police officers. PM you need to do something

  8. Dani says:

Crime happens everywhere. To the commentor that listed Belize as the “most dangerous country to live or visit”. I spent 6 weeks visiting Belize from Canada and can say that I honestly had nothing violent or even crime-like happen to me. Sadly I cannot say the same from the many cities I have visited in my country. Even after that I would not deem my country unsafe to live or visit.
This crime to me seems rather personal given the nature of the murder. My theory would lead towards the people used in building the house and or security system. It does not seem as though this was a random act of violence in the least. Nor would I say this preticular type of crime is any more common there than in most places in this world. This is very sad and even sadder that it is not surprising.
I would not hesitate to recommend visiting or retiring in Belize, as long as people make smart and safe choices while doing so.
