High level meeting on Regional Food Safety

Mourad Ahmia

The twenty third meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Cooperation in the area of food security is being held at the Radisson Fort George. The participants intend to identify initiatives to increase coordination amongst the countries while analyzing and updating information on initiatives to increase food security.

Mourad Ahmia, Executive Secretary, PGTF, Group of 77

“The global food crisis reinforced by the ongoing global financial and economic crisis has become a major challenge for developing countries. It has evolved into a situation of significant mal-distribution of the world food supply and the lack of coherence in international policies. Today, there is pressing need to promote the implementation of actions and strategies that will minimize the negative impact of food crisis; especially within the context of the achievement of millennium development goals. We believe that the achievement of food security requires strengthening and revitalizing the agricultural sector in developing countries through enhanced agricultural research; especially capacity building in different sectors.”

Jose Miguel Perez

Jose Miguel Perez, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in Belize

“Food security has recently been given much attention in the global context despite continued food security crisis around the world. Factors contributing to the global food crisis include inadequate government policies, lack of strategic planning, poor harvest, unavailability of improved generic material, volatile prices, a steady increase in the use of crop lands to supply material for bio-fuels and the growing world demand for safer and more nutritious food. ICA is a specialized agency of the inter-American system for the promotion of agriculture and rural well-being and our efforts are fully focused on making agriculture competitive and sustainable in the Americas.”

Carlos Bivero, Director of Relations, SELA

“Without any doubt, this is a top priority issue for all the countries of the region in view of its impact on the economies and above all, it’s relevance in the social field particularly at the level of nutrition and health in the most vulnerable sectors of our society. This new meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean has been organized with the co-sponsorship of the Government of Belize and I would like to take the opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to the Minister of Natural Resources and Agriculture for hosting us at this meeting.”

The conference concludes on Tuesday and Bivero will be appearing on Open Your Eyes.

CAN YOU TELL US , THE SMALL FARMERS, WHERE WE CAN BUY GOOD RK BEANS SEED AND SOME SOY BEANS SEED…HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR THE PAST MONTH….

  2. Seletar says:

David, that is a good, practical question! I’d like GOB to make it easier for our farmers to get all the seed they need, and at competitive prices.

Sadly, most of the time GOB and its policies get in the way of farmers and businessmen, and becomes a chokepoint that makes it harder to grow food and do other business.
