News Five Award-winning Andrea Polanco amongst winners at 2012 Youth Awards
Youths, between the ages of fifteen to twenty-nine, from across the country gathered at the Bliss this morning for this year’s youth award ceremony. Young people, who were nominated by the public and selected by a panel of judges, were recognized for their achievements and work towards the development of Belize. A record number of eighty nominations were received this year and the top three in the respective categories were recognized for their efforts. Among the awardees was News Five’s Andrea Polanco, who was bested the Youth in the Media category at the prestigious awards ceremony.

Today, fourteen Belizean youth were recognized as top achievers along with two other nominees for each category at the annual Belize Youth Awards. Minister Herman Longsworth says that today shouldn’t be the only time young people are awarded for their contributions to Belize.
Herman Longsworth, Minister of State, Min. of Youth, Education and Sports
“Today’s National Youth’s Award should remind us of the many positive things that our young people are engaged in and are achieving. Let not today be the only day in which we recognize the positive achievements of our young people. Let this be something we try to do every day in our individual ways.”
Director of the Department of Youth Services says that the actions by Belizean awardees are worthy of commendation and emulation.
Christine Smith, Director, Department of Youth Services
“In the midst of all the negatives and all the hate that seeps into our lives as Belizeans, it is heart-warming to know that young people across the length and breadth of our country are engaging themselves in their own development and are contributing to the development of their community. They are excelling in education, sports, music, civic pride and community outreach. They are doing this humbly with no expectation of rewards or acknowledgement. Let us share in their knowledge and gifts, because it is the right thing to do.”
Minister Longsworth says that inorder for Belize to continue grow and develop, it requires a concerted effort of all stakeholders. He tasked the gathering to be the change they want to see in Belize.
“Yes, we too, all of us have a collective responsibility for the development of our communities; our young people and of our country. This is not the sole responsibility of the few that form the official government. It is the responsibility of us, all of us, for the development and stewardship of our people and country.”
Among the awardees were top achievers in the categories of Sports, Arts and Culture, Academics, Media, Services Provider and Youth in Enterprise. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
