Ranchito carwasher murdered by gunmen in shadows

Humberto Ivan Gonzalez Jr.

There have been nine murders in Corozal since the beginning of the year.  The trend is a cause for concern for residents of the northern district because the total number of homicides in 2011 stood at only five. On Monday, a car washer didn’t stand a chance at survival; two armed men lay waited him at a bar in Ranchito. As he was leaving, the gunmen discharged their weapon on a vehicle he was travelling in. The family sees no plausible reason for the loss of life. News Five’s Andrea Polanco went north for the story.

Shot once to the right side of the chest, twenty year old Humberto Ivan Gonzalez Junior didn’t survive the bullet. After eleven o’clock on Monday night he was killed when two men fired more than ten shots at this pick-up truck. Gonzalez was in the passenger seat, while his friend, Martin Armstrong, was driving.

“I don’t know the name of the boy but when we went to the police station we heard he was with ‘Bam’ or ‘Bum’ I don’t know the boy. Think they say that it is something with somebody’s husband. But I really don’t know the boy. We saw him when he came here to get him because they were going to a party. He sometimes tell me, mommy I am going to a party and he goes out alone and then when he comes, somebody brings him. So I don’t know if he had any enemies; I can’t tell you.”

Andrea Polanco

“So yesterday his friend came here to pick him up?”

Voice of: Dorita Gonzalez

“Well, my mother told me that somebody came for him because I was in school. First day of school I worked there and I went seven-thirty. He was still sleeping and then my mommy said that he heard a call and somebody came for him. He bathe and he went out. He said right now I am coming. He came back and I think it’s after dinner he came back and said he was going to a party.”

But after he left a second time, he never returned home. According to police, Gonzalez and Armstrong were socializing here at “El Palacio Dulce Bar” in Ranchito Village around eleven last night. The two men left the establishment but upon reaching the highway, they saw two men dressed in dark clothing, standing on the street side. The men fired multiple shots, fatally hitting Gonzalez at the entrance of the drive way to the bar. The Gonzalez family, however, didn’t know Humberto to socialize at that bar.

Andrea Polanco

“So have you or the family heard that he was socializing at a bar just outside in Ranchito Village?”

Voice of Dorita Gonzalez

“Well I think the police said something about it. I don’t know which bar; they said some bar, but I really don’t know exactly.”

Andrea Polanco

“El Palacio; do you know if he would go there regularly?”

Voice of: Dorita Gonzalez

“No, uhuh. He had a girlfriend in Calcutta and he go visit her, but he’s not a drunkard, drunkard that I could tell you.”

The family is unable to say what may have caused the Humberto’s murder.

Voice of: Dorita Gonzalez

“For me, he was a good boy. Well, I am the mother and I won’t say if he’s bad—maybe outside he was bad, but I don’t know. I only know he had a lot of friends. He was friendly and if he was in something wrong, I can’t you because he would never tell mi, “Mommy, dis and dis wrong.” If he get in trouble outside, sometimes I find it out from other persons and not from his mouth; he won’t tell me nothing.”

Andrea Polanco

“But would he get into trouble frequently, prior to his death?”

Voice of: Dorita Gonzalez

“No, hmmm. If I know, no. I don’t know if he had enemies or… I noh know.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you believe someone wanted him dead or do you think he wasn’t the intended target?”

Voice of: Dorita Gonzalez

“Well, I can’t tell you nothing about that because like I tell you, he never tell me what problem he had.”

Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.

There is speculation that the murder may be connected to another recent homicide that took place in Corozal. The officer in command of the Corozal Police, Gualberto Garcia, declined an interview.

This is happening in all the out districts ever since barrow sent all the gang members to the districts and the worse part is he is the biggest big got and he is so prejudice it’s not even funny I will bet you they will not find who did it every time a Spanish person is killed they don’t even look for the murderer this is due to the prejudice of barrow Dejuan de martarse déjà es so para Los mulatos.

Corozal used to be a quiet and safe place, but in the last few years it seems to have become a new center for the drug trade and the murders that always follow. What happened to the civic movement that was announced just a few months back, with citizens and businesses organizing to help the police fight crime?

It was a good idea, but ideas need actual work to become effective. I hope it can be revived before Corozal becomes another Belizean town too dangerous to visit.

Murders in Belize is alarming in this new year. Cant you see all the crime occuring and the Govt does not say or try to show any type of concern? Corozal only had 5 murders in 2011. Now starting the new year 2012 to now murders are at 9! This is sign that crime is and will continue to take over Belize. Despite all the new laws of tinting, guns and ammunition, the GSU in place, and all other tactics crime is still high and continues to grow.

There is a lot of harvest to be reaped. For every seed that’s sown, consequences will follow.
