Poll shows enormous support for tax increase to pay Superbond

The Superbond restructuring continues to be hotly debated. So in our latest internet polling, we asked: Should GOB increase taxes to pay for the super bond? Over two thousand participated and surprisingly, seventy-three percent voted for the tax increase while twenty-seven percent were against it. On our blog, however, all the posts were vehemently against increased taxes. One viewer commented that, “We Belizeans must refuse to pay more taxes. If you did the research, Belizeans already pay a cumulative tax of sixty cents on every dollar received.” Turning to tonight’s question: What are you most concerned about; Crime, the lack of jobs or the high Cost of Living?

  1. Jose says:

It’s only natural that those who leave comments are those who DON’T want to pay more taxes. This is a normal reaction, Channel 5. Nothing to be surprised about.

On the other hand, Belizeans who think that taxes should be increased to pay for the Superbond have little to comment about.

If the GOB is running out of money, then taxes should be increased to pay for the Superbond and honour our debts.

Nobody likes paying taxes, but it is our duty to pay them. There is no need to be writing to many comments about it…

  2. Ricky Malthus says:

I view the reported findings that Belizeans want to pay more taxes conflicting and not reflecting the actual findings on the ground. Everyday at least 35 men and women stop me on the streets and ask(beg) for a hand-out. Besides, I conducted a survey using the scientific “CHI Square” test using multivariables which showed that Most Belizeans are against higher taxes. If your station received 73% Belizeans wanting higher taxes to pay off the Superbond, then I suggest that 90% of those were UDP plants to skew your polls. So I reject your hypothesis thatBelizeans want to pay higher taxes when decent people go begging, they have started to walk because they because they can’t afford gasoline, and discreetly have started to pilfer to survive just to eat to survive and they are the lucky ones , the working poor. Just be careful that UDP has its gunslingers out there to create havoc, chaos, and propaganda. Suggest you walk the streets and obtain first hand data.

  3. Ricky Malthus says:

On reflecting, those people who want to pay higher taxes, should pool those millions and create jobs and be productive and increase the GDP. Why spend good money on bad investments like the Superbond!!

  4. Earl Grey says:

Where did the original SUPER BOND MONEY GO??? Who in their right minds would support HIGHER TAXES… and for THIS??? are BELIZEANS SLEEPING or…

  5. BMNJ says:

There should be a poll as to who bears more blame and resposibility for this super bond mess – PUP’s Said Musa and Ralph Fonseca or UDP’s Dean Barrow.

  6. Rough says:

why pay more taxes?? who benefited from the millions and millions and millions? Not the grass root Belizeans. .

  7. Tina says:

I think the poll should have been more accurate and asked do you already pay taxes and are you willing to pay more.

  8. Uncle Benji says:

Taxation is not the answer. There is no such thing as a good tax. Belizean government’s view of the superbond crisis could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. If it dies and owes taxes, sell the dead body.

Belizeans, we are bitng off more than we can chew. We are Obamanizing ourselves.

Obamanizing = a helpless society that depends on higher taxes for resolving all problems. A society that is starving with a loaf of bread in each hand.

  9. Rod says:

This poll is so bogus because the ones voting are all the udp traitors that are living in the us and can afford to come on here and talk garbage because they don’t live here they are not experiencing the crippling way of life they are killing this country I say anyone who goes and live in the us should not be able to vote because they are traitors to their country then want to have the previledge of voting instead of facing facts that the country is in crisis and they want to be in denial about the pm being the worse in the history of this country they continue to defend a total loser like barrow goes to show you the mentality of the traitors living I the us.

  10. ROMNEY says:

Most people don’t even understand economy, demand/supply & tax increase. I know anyone in their right MIND WOULD NOT VOTE for TAX HIKE

  11. Rhenae Nunez says:

Dean Barrow once said, “Belizeans are not sophisticated enough to conceptualize certain things!” He was right! That was the most brilliant thing I ever heard from the Prime Minister’s pie hole!

  12. Sports Fan says:

There is a lot to be concerned about crime, but where the root of the problem is is shortage of Jobs. If people have jobs, they keep occupied and automatically crime reduces.

  13. bob!! says:

What other choices do we have???? Please tell me! What can we do to get money to pay off the super bond? — Tell me pple —– Lets put some solutions on the table!!!!

  14. cayobway says:

If there is to be a difference in belize, and a way to help pay off the bond, then why not stop the ministers and their closest friend from abusing the belizean people’s money. explain to me why is it that they all need new auto to drive each year? why do they get tax cut on the business they run” and why can’t hey take a paycut to help the belizean people? look at these avenues first before raising taxes, because the poor cannot pay, and the rich find a way to not pay.

  15. A Jew says:

How can lack of jobs be the problem if people dont want to work? They prefer a life of crime than going out in the field and work.

I dont agree with this poll and agree that this poll had voters that HAVE TIES TO THE GOVERNMENT. If you notice when you open and vote on Channel and if you go off and come back on to channel five you can vote again. I know that 90% of Belizeans dont want to pay higher taxes.

  16. ouagadoudou says:

GOB is getting already enough with the fuel price…it’s already a not justify price compare to the cost of petrol

  17. O.Walk Observer says:

One cannot extract more juice from an already dry source; working belizeans are already being over-taxed thru all forms. Maybe those that voted in favour of additional taxes do not even work or are making below the taxable bracket or are not resident belizeans. The government has not even attempted to apply any austerity measure on its squandering whatsoever; think about how much is spent on traveling and vehicle allocations for personal use; how about recalling useless ambassadors from abroad and one big issue, BELTRAID issues concessions to companys to import costly items duty free or pay just the environmental tax – millions are lost this way and this is a fact, happening for years. Besides any tax increase will only be a drop of water that won’t have any effect since people are already taxed heavily.

  18. John says:

Ricky, there should be no need to raise taxes to pay for the Superbond as GOB has the money to pay. However, too many Belizeans still don’t pay any taxes, and they should pay some taxes to help pay for the Superbond.

  19. Eye in the Sky says:

Belizean OIL should be nationalized and pay for the Superbond and pay every Belizean an allowance wage and fix up everything in Belize, and become a tax & duty free country.
Just like Dubai, Abu Dabi, and other oil countries.
Gasoline in Venezuela only costs pennies for a gallon.

  20. Buju says:

You think UDP’s actually watch 5 News and would write blogs for Channel 5???

  21. Critic says:

When an ordinary citizen borrows your money and then turns around and tell you they will pay you when and how they please or not at all. You would call that person a crook. I may be poor but nobody can call me unethical or not true to my commitments. Moral: don’t take people things if you can’t afford it. Shame on the Belize government to pull such a stunt. Belize’s name is now mud.

  22. Cayo Man says:

Rhenae Nunez ur just like d rest of lazy @$$ kerob with absolutely zero to contribute to society. Yuh di starve now dat PUP nuh deh in power……get a real job….PUP no in power to give you tax payers $ to criticize Dean Barrow.
