Trucker killed in Orange Walk

One district that is in need of peace is Orange Walk. In less than two weeks, a second person has been brutally killed in the local community. A thirty-three year old man that frequents the north transporting cattle to the south was the target of gun violence in the Louisiana Area of the town. He was sleeping inside his truck when he received three fatal shots to the body. While a motive has not been ascertained, it is believed to be a case of robbery.

The shattered glass and blood stains inside the cab of a truck on Banak Street in the Louisiana Area of Orange Walk Town are the telltale signs that a violent crime occurred in the night.  Thirty-three year old Fernando Quib, a truck driver from San Vicente in Toledo was sleeping inside this HINO truck with Dangriga license plates when a gunman approached the truck and fired several shots—hitting him to the left side of his rib cage, the center of the chest and the upper stomach area.

Miguel Pren, Resident

“About round two to three this morning, I was sleeping when I heard three gunshots. I noh usually get u, but I get up to peek through my window. And I have this truck right across from my window and I see everything normal; I noh see nothing. So I start to look inside my garage if anything and everything normal.  When I get up about five this morning I see police here and when I check, I come out and the officer tell me dehn murder somebody inside the truck.”

Quib, who transported cattle from Orange Walk to the south, was on a routine trip. And at about four on Tuesday afternoon, he came to Mike Pren’s Garage to have the brakes on the truck checked and fixed. And instead of spending the night in a hotel, he decided to spend the night in the truck.

Miguel Pren

“Dehn come to do their job here; anything mechanic shop with my son. He came here around four o’clock yesterday evening. Ih had brakes problem with the trucks. But we couldn’t fix it because after five everything closed. So we try wait till this morning to fix everything; make ih try travel again. Dehn come fi buy usually cattle and pig from Shipyard and dehn ker it south.”

“So it’s not the first time he came here?”

Miguel Pren

“Not the first time. Dehn have bout three or four of dehn trucks just like this one here and dehn come usually with mechanic problems; dehn come all the way from P.G. with my son to fix it.”

The brazen assailant fired the deadly shots in a well-lit area. So what was the motive for this most recent murder? Residents suspect it’s robbery, but police are investigating.

Miguel Pren

“I have no idea. I think this time, I can’t tell you why but I think they come to rob him because he noh got nobody here; he got no friends here. I think they come fi rob.”

Duane Moody

“Mister Pren, I know this must have shocked the entire neighborhood because I understand that for people here in Louisiana, this is really a crime-prone area or a hotspot.”

Miguel Pren

“That’s the first time; everybody get shock fi true. Even my daughter was crying this morning because he talked to my daughter yesterday evening. When you hear this morning, you get a shock from that murder.”

No one was seen running from the scene. Duane Moody for News Five.

The body of Fernando Quib was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and police are awaiting the arrival of his relatives to officially identify the body.

I hope someone, police or community, can track the killer down and send him from this world without mercy. If it can be done with a trial and a rope, that’s fine. If it has to be done another way, that’s fine with me, too. All murderers must die in the Jewel.

For the poor victim, may he rest in peace. My prayers to his family and loved ones.
