Suspects detained for E-Buy robbery/homicide

John Chessman

A Ladyville businessman was fatally shot during a late evening robbery at E-Buy Supermarket last Thursday August ninth.  Two armed assailants entered the store shortly after five p.m. and demanded money from the owner, thirty-one year old Peixian Tan. He complied and handed over the day’s proceeds from the cash register, but as the robbers left, one of them still shot Tan in the head. Tan, who recently became a father, died en route to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Investigators recovered one expended Aguilar brand nine millimeter shell from the scene.  That incident was discussed at the weekly police press conference.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

dilon clarke

“I just want to give you an update on the murder of Chinese businessman, Peixan Tan.  It is reported that on the ninth of August, that was Thursday, he was in his store when two men approached brandishing a firearm. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and upon exiting the store, one of the assailants took out a firearm and fired a single shot, hitting Tan in the left side of his head. Tan has since succumbed to that injury we have two persons of interest detained in connection with this murder and we hope to file charges soon.”

Following today’s press conference, twenty-two year old John Chessman and eighteen year old Dilon Clarke were arraigned for Tan’s murder. No pleas were taken and both men are to re-appear in court on September twentieth.

I hope DPP can win convictions when they have the crime on video. Get a conviction, then hang the garbage.

No mercy for murderers in the Jewel.

  2. Stygian says:

I think now we just have to accept that Belize has forever changed for the worst; with some of these crime happening on the “North Side” i hope we Belizeans realize that this pattern is forshadowing of what’s come. Crime is everybody’s problem. So Belizeans stop venting your frustration by saying “heng di dawgs” etc. It will never happen.

This John Chessman needs the Arthur Young treatment, he is a menace to society, he keeps getting off with murder, gun possession, robbery etc, dude have been involve with criminal activity since he was a teen & he keeps getting off…I don’t understand why. Google his name & you will all get a history of what this guy is about, he is an animal that needs to be put down. If the dpp fails to get a conviction with this recent incident it will only be a matter of time before someone else falls prey to this guy. This is the type of individual who should have been aborted the moment mother found out about his @$$. The less of these people…the happier society will be.

What in the world is happening in Belize? Each time I read news from my homeland, I am confronted with these horrendous crime news that are happening on a daily basis. As a Belizean residing abroad, this situation makes me think twice of even making a visit with my family. Rampant drug use , lack of guidance , greed and lack of ambition and despair among our youths is further exacerbating this situation. Where is the leadership in our country to say enough is enough?
There is no public outcry ,unless an Oriental is the victim as is this particular case. Unless there is a change of laws and leadership in Belize, conditions will worsen. Away with Crime Minister Dean Barrow . Wake up Belizeans!

  5. blackberry says:

This is what happened when the law enforcement and justice system fails us; like it did with Bert Vasquez. This guy bones should be white in Prison. Repeated killers like this should not be allowed to walk the streets of Belize.

  6. scared says:

why with so much crime , all over the city was the Belama Police Station closed down. shots were fired friday nite right in front of the closed station. what is Belize becoming. a lawless failed state like Somalia.

  7. BMNJ says:

The only way this country is going to be better is to get even worst. What I meant is that if the criminals, on a regular basis, started to target the ‘ultra rich’ in our society, the Ministers and their family members, the high ranking PUPs and their family members, the judges & lawyers and their family members, etc…, then there will be drastic measures and changes to our legislature and judicial system.

Capital punishment is not important right now in the eyes of the politicians – PUP nor UDP. They are more focused on how to bash one another: who got land for little money or for free, pointing fingers at which Ministers are incompetent, etc. and meanwhile brothers and sisters are falling almost everyday due to crime and violence.

Channel 7 said, “Viewers may recognize the name John Chessman Jr. because in May of this year, he was acquitted of the May 2008 double murder of 19 year-old Karen Crawford and 44 year-old Maurice Cadle – the second and third times he’d beaten a murder charge.” Something is terribly wrong with our justice system and our country as a whole.

  8. Seletar says:

Gentle justice for Chessman. A bullet to the head, no questions asked.

Clarke could use the same treatment.

The country will be a slightly better place if that happens.

  9. NY says:

The media needs to start asking the PM, and his ministers the tough questions, but I guess these folks are in the tank for the current administration. A few constant question should be, what is the GOB doing to solve the crime situation in the jewel, why is the death penalty not on the table for convicted killers, and why is it that the DPP conviction rate is so low. The media needs to do its job and advocate, inform and represent the people of Bze. These killers need to be eradicated, so that others who are contemplating on comitting the same crimes, would know that they would suffer the same faith.

  10. Hatari says:

Do you realize that our conviction rate on murder is only 3%!!!!!! If you commit murder you have a 97% chance of walking free! This is disgusting! Who’s to blame for this? The police? They do not have the training or leadership to conduct their jobs in a professional manner. Why is this? Because the upper ranks of the police department are controlled by politicians who do not have a clue as to how to handle our crime situation . . . and they probably have too many skeletons in their own closets. Our judicial system is antiquated and they too lack the expertise necessary to properly prosecute these cases. And witnesses? Would you step forward against these murdering scumbags knowing full well that they are going to come after you and the police are incapable of protecting you. Our criminal justice system is a joke!
