Neighbor’s machete attack fueled by jealousy?
Another chopping incident occurred over the weekend in the Corozal District; this time in San Roman Village. Ocias Cobarruvias was walking home along with his son and a friend, when his neighbor attacked him with a machete. Police say, Julio Vega allegedly pulled a machete from off his bicycle and started hitting him repeatedly to the back, left rib cage and stomach. Vega then chopped him on the head, causing a large wound. But what was the motive for this attack on Cobarruvias? Cobarruvias says it’s jealousy.
“Thirty-four year old Ocias Cobarruvias, his eight year old son, Joscias, and a friend, Herson Garcia, were walking home around eight-thirty p.m. on Saturday night here in San Roman Village, Corozal District when a man identified as his neighbor, Julio Vega, approached the group of bicycle and started attacking Cobarruvias with a machete.”
Herson Garcia, Friend of Victim
“We came walking by the corner when the guy came out with his machete and bike and he took out his machete and then he started to chop the next guy. So I ran home and I grab a stick; but Ocias took the guy’s bike and started to defend himself with it. By the time I returned, the attacker had already gone into his house. It did seem like he was drunk because I don’t think that he would have done it if he wasn’t drunk.”
“I was coming with my son, Herson Garcia and a friend, Paco. Paco went to his house and like fifteen steps after he left us, the man came out on his bike and he passed right beside me and the man pulled out a machete and came towards me to hit me and I dodged it. He then grabbed his bicycle and I used it as cover. The bicycle fell and then he chopped me in the head. But he hit me a lot of times with the machete. The doctor says that the machete reach to the bone in my head.”
Cobarruvias received a large cut wound to his head and six stitches to close the gash. But what could have triggered Vega to attack him? Cobarruvias says that it’s jealousy.
“The guy attached me because of jealousy. He is Julio Vega and there is witnesses. Nobody was drinking; I drink wah chocolate and a chips. We were there relaxing. This is not the first time he came here. He had come here two times before to my house and I have witness that he has already come to my house. To tell you the truth; he trip on a piece of board and he fell alone. My wife can tell you that he had come here two times she saw it.”
