James Adderley with the weekend sports update

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The Belize Defense Force went into Game II of the Champion of Champions Cup inside the MCC Grounds yesterday with a commanding lead after pummeling West Lake 6-1 to open this 2 Game championship series. The 1st hint of goal comes when Tyron Pandy picks out his B.D.F. teammate, Harrison Tasher, who is denied by a timely intervention from the keeper. It’s the B.D.F. again looking to open the scoreboard when Marlon Mesa aims at the far corner from long range only to see the ball veer off the target. No doubt the military is in control of the action but this miss from pointblank range by Marlon Mesa emphasized the fact that they have nothing to show for it.

For certain people, Mesa should have done better with this nice feed from Byron Usher but he lets the goalkeeper off the hook. However, when this shot attempt by Lisbey Castillo reaches Byron usher, he smacks it into the net as the B.D.F. take a 1-zip lead. This leads to this celebration that could have used a little more synchronization. So we go to 2nd half and immediately Shane Flowers comes up with a wonderful header from this feed off the right wing and he ties the ballgame for West Lake at 1 apiece. In the meantime, this defensive header by Michael Martinez turns into the dreaded auto goal after taking a strange bounce that gives West Lake the 2-1 lead. It’s a strange day for Martinez folks because a minute later, he floats this into the danger zone. The West Lake keeper mishandles the routine save so Ervin Flores swoops down on the header to tie the ballgame at 2 apiece.

The 2-2 tie holds to the long whistle, but the Belize Defence Force is the champion of Champions with an 8-3 aggregate from the 2 Game series and we say congratulations. In the meantime, we’re not sure what’s happening with the Premier League of Belize because nobody seems to know when the 2012 season will start.

Turning to the softball scene, we say congratulations to the Telemedia Female Softball Team which represented Belize at the 7th Central American Senior Softball Championship being staged at San Jose, Costa Rica. On Friday, they walloped Costa Rica 15-2 and on Saturday fell to Guatemala 4-2, rolled over Panama 6-2 and got past Nicaragua 6-4. Yesterday Belize handles El Salvador in 8-1 to complete its schedule with a showing of 5 wins 1 loss. Guatemala took the 2012 title with Belize 2nd and Nicaragua 3rd. Leandra Guy of Belize was voted Best Pitcher and we say kudos to one and all.

In cycling news, 25 riders participated, C-Ray’s 30 mile race staged on the Burrell Boom circuit on Saturday and they’re off. At the turn around point, a 5-man breakaway led by Brandon Cattouse and including Jairo Campos, Giovanni Lovell and Byron Pope controls the pace as they head back. Around the Boom Bridge, Jairo Campos and Giovanni Lovell make it a 2-man lead as they create an on-the road alliance. As they head to the finish line, Jairo Campos of Benny’s takes over and he raises his arms in victory forcing Giovanni Lovell of Telemedia into 2nd place. Brandon Cattouse of C-Ray then speeds out of the chase group to grab 3rd place, Leroy Cassasola rolls in for 4th and Byron Pope round out the top 5.

In closing folks, our Olympic contingent returns tomorrow from the London Games and we salute Kaina Martinez, Kenneth Medwood and Eddermys Sanchez who took our aspirations to this event. Do you know that Belize came in 5th in the Best Dressed Category?

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
