3 by 3, Corozal residents take basketball to New York

Paul Thompson

In other news, basketball is a sport particularly enjoyed by many youths and adults. The Belize National Team has seen successes over the years at tournaments such as COCABA in Cancun, Mexico. But fielding an entire team is a costly and time consuming venture. But a version of the sport, called three by three, is creating more hoop dreams for players across the country. The half court game consisting of three players per team has seen its finals being played this past Saturday for spot in a world tour to be played in New York. According to the organizer, Paul Thompson, President of the BBF, the three by three games will soon be an Olympic sport.

Paul Thompson, President, BBF

“I’d like to say thanks to our sponsors of the three by three basketball tour, the Bowen and Bowen Group; particularly Sprite and Belikin Beer. This last Saturday at Jamborees, the Sprite/Belikin three by three tournament held its finals. We had six teams from across the country and in the senior division, the Corozal Ambush Team came out winners, beating the Orange Walk Squad, which consisted of Farren Lauriano, Winston Pratt and Darren Bovel and the team that beat them from Corozal included Benedict Terry, Marshall Richards and Jason Grant.”

“Now, I understand that this team will be going to the US?”

Paul Thompson

“Yes, because they are champions of the three by three basketball tournament or tour, they qualify to go to New York to participate in the World Tour, which will be held on August eighteenth and nineteenth. So we are in preparations right now to have those guys go to New York on those dates.”

Jose Sanchez

“What I also understand is this is going to be an Olympic sport. Is that correct?”

Paul Thompson

“Yes, in 2016 or 2020, it should be an Olympic sport discipline in the Olympics. That is one of the reasons why FIBA is aggressively promoting the three by three game.”

Jose Sanchez

“Half court games are typical in any basketball court in the country. Do you think that this is something that Belize could excel in and maybe someday win a medal”?

Paul Thompson

“Of course, we are very hopeful that we could win medals in the three by three game or in the regular game. I don’t think we are very far when it comes to the regular basketball. I mean, we went to Centro Basket and we were only a few points away from advancing to the next level to play U.S.A. You know I think we’re not very far if we invest in our players and in the sport.”

I’m no basketballer, but I watched these games, and they are pretty exciting and action-packed. Best of luck to these players as they proceed to international competition!

I find that the Basketball Assc is heavily biased to Belize City players, not only in these games but in general. Whenever, a team is selected to represent Belize abroad, the majority of the players are selected from the City. There are pools and pools of talented young players in the Districts who are just as good.
