Evacuation plans activated to move islanders

To avoid overcrowding, persons evacuating the islands are being taken to Orange Walk and Belmopan. CEMO says homeless persons across the city will be picked up and taken care of, but it is asking neighbors to inform them of any “shut-ins” who need assistance.

“All those persons who are coming into Belize City from the islands—I indicated that there’s a voluntary evacuation—those persons who come in from the island and who are being evacuated will be bused to shelters that are not in Belize City. We’ve actually coordinated it so that some persons will be taken to Belmopan, some persons will be taken to Orange Walk and we actually have persons who are going to take them, we have shelters. So we are coordinating, it’s a national effort and the City Emergency Management Organization is doing its part in coordination and as directed by NEMO to indicate that all those persons are bused to the appropriate area. So our emergency plan already documents where every single person will go from San Pedro and Caye Caulker and the other islands and that plan does not call for them being housed in Belize City.

Our special constables will go around and they have gone around already but we haven’t opened shelters, we’re not at that stage as yet, but we will have persons going around and asking people if we see people who demonstrate that they are unable to take care of themselves, to really deal with them. I also want to make a point that we are also trying to work with shut-ins and I know this is an aspect that councilor Willoughby is always communicates on that if persons know a person who is a shut in because of course, the homeless on the street are much easier to see when we drive around and we see them there, we can just pick them up and take them to a shelter. But we’re asking residents to call us in if they know any person—this would be done tomorrow—if they know any person who is a shut-in. So some persons might be in their home, they might not have anyone to take care of them and those are people we can arrange transportation to take them to a shelter.”
