City Hall’s summer camp is open

Still looking for something to do for the summer? You can head on out to the Yarborough field for the next four weeks. The Belize City Council has officially launched its own annual summer camp for students. The councilor with responsibility for sports, says that this year’s camp will be a bit different, however, it will not be short of fun or sports.

Bernard Pitts, Councilor

“This year’s program, we extended it to four different disciplines; basketball, volleyball, football and softball, and we had it that way mainly because kids wanted more to do and we didn’t want to limit them to maybe just one or two disciplines so we decided to extend it and have the program on both north and south side.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, how kids are you guys catering for this year?”

“Currently we catered to one hundred and fifty kids but right now we are at one hundred and eighty kids. But we have managed to get the resources to provide food and drinks for them every day.”

“Now, apart from them having fun, being engaged in sporting activities and keeping them occupied for the summer, what else do you hope they will take away from this camp?”

Bernard Pitts

“That you know, besides participating we want them to learn discipline; have sportsman like attitude and to pass it on to maybe a brother or a young sister or so. I know that their role right now as younger children are the future of our country because we are not going to be here forever so we need to have younger kids coming up in the same avenues to prepare for others as well.”

The council is expecting take camp’s participants on a trip and it will also donate school supplies to the kids at the end of the program.

Nice article….I love to see people using their skills to keep the children busy in summer camp. But what about including the performing and creative arts too, ie: dance, painting, drawing, drama????
