Was Flowers a victim of gang warfare?

Steven Flowers

The first person to be killed over the weekend was Steven Flowers, who was shot multiple times on the chest and rib cage in close proximity of his Mahogany Street house. Flowers was along with another person, Rayan Mejia hanging out in front of a bakery when gunshots rang out. Mejia was also shot and hospitalized for injuries to his leg. There is reason to believe the murder may be gang related and police suspect that there may be retaliation. News Five’s Jose Sanchez has a report.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

Twenty-four year old Steven Flowers was killed in front of the Isaray Bakery, two minutes walking distance from his home near the Charles Hyde Building on Mahogany Street. The police press officer says that Flowers was shot multiple times after nine p.m. on Friday night.

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“Steven Flowers lost his life. This was reported sometime around nine-twenty-five p.m. on the twenty-seventh of July when police visited the K.H.M.H. and saw Steven Flowers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the ribcage, the right side of his chest, right hand and also to the right side.”

Flowers was not alone, one of his friends was also injured during the incident.

“Ryan Mejia; he was seen suffering from gunshot wounds to both legs. Flowers succumbed to his injuries sometime around eleven p.m. whilst undergoing treatment at the K.H.M.H. our investigation has revealed so far that Flowers and Mejia were socializing on Mahogany Street in front of bakery, when they heard several shots coming from a dark area and realized that they were hit.  Both men were rushed to the K.H.M.H. We have four persons detained in connection with this murder and hope to file charges soon.”

“I’m told that he may be associated with the P.I.V. Is that a gang-related homicide?

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Yes it is; it is.”

Jules Vasquez

“And so are you guys expecting retaliation? Are you preparing for a possible retaliation?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“We are prepared for a possible retaliation and I must mention that we have detained four persons that we believe are directly involved in this recent incident. And hope to file charges soon.”

His mourning family understandably declined to comment.   Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Four persons were detained for questioning; we’ll have more on the violence over the weekend coming up later in the newscast.
