Roaming across the border with SMART

As prepaid cell phone users, have you been exhausted by not being able to make calls from you phones ones you cross the borders? Well both telecommunication companies are servicing your needs. And while it is still in the pipeline for Belize Telemedia Limited, today, SMART launched its international roaming service for prepaid customers. It will allow prepaid customers to purchase the service using their phones that will establish international messaging and phone calls across the borders into neighboring Mexico. Public Relations Officer at Smart, Ian Courtenay told us more.

Ian Courtenay, Public Relations Officer, Smart Belize

“Today, Smart is launching to our customers prepaid roaming. So we are allowing to our prepaid customers to be able to roam—we are launching first with Mexico. So traveling in Quintana Roo/Yucatan Peninsula between Merida, Cancun, Chetumal and all areas in between as well as Mexico City, our prepaid customers will be able to roam using their prepaid credit.”

“So there is no extra cost to this service other than what you have on your phone?”

Ian Courtenay

“We actually have an activation cost which is five dollars and that is good for thirty days. The customers can do that on their phone by dialing into star ROAM (*7626) so that they don’t have to come into the showroom, they don’t have to leave a deposit. Unfortunately they won’t be able to use promotional credit and so on, but whatever credit you have on your phone, you can use to make roaming calls. Our next step is with our partners in the U.S. so in a couple months, customers will also be able to roam in the U.S. and Caribbean using prepaid roaming. We are also proud of this service because we are implemented what is called the virtual home network so while roaming, you’ll be able to dial as if you are dialing in Belize. So you can use your contact list and so on; you don’t have to remember international codes and all of that. So that makes it that much easier for our customers.”

Courtenay says SMART customers can come into to showrooms for more information or simply call the call center at star ten-ninety. This will also be available while roaming.
