Men killed in fight with armed forces identified as Belmopan residents

The Police Department continues to follow leads that were uncovered following Saturday’s battle with four men near the Rocky Point end of Ambergris Caye. The identity of one of three men who were killed in the crossfire was revealed to be Kendale Flowers, but since then identification cards on the other bodies have identified them as Alexander Marzariego and Ismael Garcia of Belmopan. Rumors of a state sponsored killing of the men prompted the armed forces to stage another press conference this afternoon to clarify information that the media allegedly got wrong. We say allegedly because we only reported what was given. News Five’s Jose Sanchez attended the conference at the Belize Coastguard Headquarters on the Western Highway and sifted through the information to find out what was different at today’s briefing.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

The police and the Coastguard held another press conference to review the operation at the north end of San Pedro, during which three persons were killed and one escaped during a firefight. Pictures of the three men were sent to News Five. They show the men in camouflage, semi dressed in boxers, American eagle tactical cartridges, Winchester cartridges laid out beside them. The bodies from left to right are Alexander Mazariego, Kendale Flowers in the middle and Alley Ismael Garcia on the right. Captain John Borland of the Coastguard recapped the mission.

Captain John Borland, Commandant, Belize Nat’l Coastguard

“The area of the incident is here where you see this bull’s eye position described as location of incident and is approximately one mile from Rocky Point. The patrol was inserted at Boca Bacalar Chico. And tasked to clear the entire area to Rocky Point which is approximately five miles south and then subsequently another five miles south down to the area of Tranquility Bay which is where the real civilization starts extending to San Pedro. The patrol was inserted sometime around six a.m. on the morning of July the seventy and started clearing the area according to their orders of any hostile or illicit activity or persons. shortly after they commenced the patrol, they began recognizing the telltale signs of persons operating in the area. What they began seeing and you will be shown the pictures later, were empty shell cases, the empty ammunition boxes and signs that the vegetation was being used as targets where they would fire their weapons as practice we presume.”

Today we learnt that the pictures that were shown to the media on Monday were not taken on Saturday, the day of the operation. But they were in fact handed over to the police a month prior to the operation by a source.

David Henderson, Acting Commissioner of Police

“If you look at the three individuals here: you will see Kendale Flowers. This was obtained a month ago, prior to this incident and the firearm is similar. If you look at the other rifle, it is similar. In fact that individual; we know who he is, we know how to get him and he will be picked up. We have obtained these photographs prior to incident. So I am just putting it out in order that the public would know and the media could be aware that we have all our information; this operation was planned, we know what we were looking at, we know the individual, there is no need for anybody to do anything illegal from the security forces.”

At least two persons are unaccounted for including the suspect who escaped.

Jose Sanchez

“If there is no boat, it means that they may have received help from San Pedro residents to reach the north end of the island; collaborators. Are you looking for other associations either on the island or in the area of Belmopan; wherever these men may have come from?”

Captain John Borland

“The operation continues in the area.”

David Henderson

David Henderson

“This is a continuous investigation. It does not end here.”

Sources say that Garcia and Mazariegos have been deported from the U.S. for relations to the eighteenth Street gang in Los Angeles. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

I’m happy to see GOB go to war on the gangsters and cartels. Who do you think these criminals were going to use their guns against? INNOCENT BELIZEANS, WHOEVER GOT IN THE WAY OF THEIR FILTHY BUSINESS!

I would support similar operations every single day until gangsters are all dead.

Investigate, sure — it may lead to more criminals. But I see NO evidence to support attacks or criticism of the security forces in this incident.

  2. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALISTO says:

Could the media be any more explicit with their controversial stories and photo of dead bodies topping the headline once again?

That question might involve a prolonged public dispute or debate.

Animals like these are the ones ruining Belmopan’s reputation, threatening our family’s security, and peace of mind.

Don’t want them there; get rid of the animals any way possible.

  3. simone says:

Just good for all of them-let it be known that criminals will die in san pedro and the immigrants who get deported better behave or go elsewhere. Great job guys and Capt Borland

  4. Rod Breda says:

I Blame Dean Barrow for forcing this gun into his hand, forcing him to go to san pedro, forcing him to live a life of crime, i also blame Dean for making him eat panades that moring. The family should march on his property, i know my brother Rod and I will be there. In all seriousness police need fi start deal with all the gangs, and i nuh mean pay they. 3 strikes rule wouldnt work in Belize only reason, you cant even get a first conviction on most of these guys to get a 3rd. The DPP need training or help, the police need resources and better training, but most importantly the bigger heads need to stop support the gangs, ministers, police, big business men.

  5. el says:

something does not look right about these photoes they look like they where dressed after being dead.

  6. Rod says:

Wake up belizeans your own leader is the cause of all the murders in the country please resign barrow resign you are a traitor to your country how can you sleep at night knowing that you are the cause of all these murders in the country mein I’ve been telling you people this for years now and some of you still support this traitor well here is your proof of what I have been telling you all .

  9. Phillybelizean says:

  10. roddist says:

  12. Stephen says:

T……………….. there was no police involve only coast guards personnel. We all know that when there is shooting done by coast guard or BDF there should be no investigation as those people have been taught to shoot to kill as every bullet must count. I am not a police or a soldier but we have to face reality, the only way the crime situation can stop is to get rid of the bad apples. All those crying, they know what their children was up to and they did not try to stop them, we all know that these youngsters brag with pictures of guns so their parents must see those. Now they are dead then get the picture, too LATE just berry them and stop the blood cloth crying.

  13. The Doc says:

My God, how Dean Barrow fu blame fu tek een deportees???? U DO NOT HAVE AN OPTION IN THIS… When deported from the US, it’s because you ARE BELIZEAN AND GONE DA AMERICA GONE DO !@$$, BUT YOU ARE STILL BELIZEAN…. So, weh unu di try seh, Dean Barrow could stop America from sending Belizeans back to Belizean??? Let me guess, a PUP Prime Minister could??? NO ONE CAN…. Hell, I had family members deported under PUP… Mek I Guess, Musa neva stop dat???? COULD HE…… NO…. Some people really ignorant…

  14. Rod says:

Doc. Ask dean how much y get paid for taking them back ask him do some homework ask him how much he was paid to take these murderers back into the country knowing that this would happen.

  15. Ragamuffin says:

So ROD and Co. Tell me – Were there any crime under th PUP?????? You guys are real idiots

  16. Uagadodo says:

To The Doc:then put them in jail for the offenses they did over there and not let them go around as regular citizens

  17. Belizean says:

AGREE WIT U “THE DOC” Rod is again and again portraying his ignorance, and his non-common sense!! I am happy for what the Coast Guard and the security forces did. The
government and authorities are there to rule, and it is what they have done. To shoot up people me and you think are criminals would not work. But if police do it, AMEN!!! They had their proof, and the authority from God!

  18. drose flowers says:

GOOD FOR THESE MEN, ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM BELMOPAN, THEY HAVE TERRORIZE BELMOPAN COMMUNITY FOR A LONG TIME, SO THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVE,
AT LEAST WE CAN LIVE IN PEACE FOR AWHILE, THE PICTURES IS PROOF OF THE TYPE OF LIVES THESE MEN LIVE, SO YOU LIVE BY THE GUN YOU DIE BY THE GUN.

I CAN’T NEVER SAY I AM SORRY, NEVER, NOT EVEN A SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILIES, FOR THEY CONDONE THIER CHILDREN TO LIVE LIKE THIS.

GOOD WORK DONE CONGRATS TO THE POLICE AND COAST GUARD

  19. the truth says:

Mazariegos had a band on his hand in two of the picture shown. can you guess the color? or the significance?

  20. Rds says:

I think, Rod, Roddist, Rod Bredda, all same person, missing the whole point and turning everything political, we need to put party politics aside if we want to get down to the real issue of crime….

  21. Rod says:

Ask dean how many pieces of silver he got paid for taking back all these gang members ask judas let’s hear what he says all your fellow belizeans getting killed robbed raped vandalized ask them how they like it ask any belizean is he better off now than before dean took over and I can bet you not one belizean will say he is better off now than before judas took over unless you are a total idiot like some of these people still trying to support this useless corrupt gov. And pm.

  22. surgery14E says:

Shut up Rod! Get some common sense, then make intelligent comments.

  23. Bzeman says:

Apparently “badman” don’t do so well in a real fire fight. Only when robbing and terrorizing innocent citizens they bad. Drop the gun and run……..Tek bad thing mek laugh…

  24. now i see says:

Very good job! !!!!. I wonder, how many innocent lives they saved? Thank you, thank you. Now go to Belmopan and take care of the rest. (PLEASE).

  25. now i see says:

To me it looks like they were taking care of a big shipment of drugs. Or waiting for a big shipment. Probably with a mexican cartel. Now the police should send the k9 and see if they find the drugs thats there.. Once again THANK YOU OFFICERS.

  26. OriginalWoman says:

Cudos to the Doc, Belizean & Ragamuffin, it still amazes me how some people make comments blaming the Prime Minister for everything that is happening bad in Belize. Some of them sound intelligent but yet, still ignorant and extremely judgmental…..Sad state of affairs in my beloved Belize.

  27. Al says:

I give a big thank you to the security force. These people are domestic terrorist, they are waging war agianst their own people all for illegal financial gain. I say continue to work on your elimination list, I am not saying there is such a thing, but do the people of Belize a service rid us of them and bring this country back to a place where people will want to come.

This is a time for the government representative to stand next to Borland and Henderson and speak about restoring law and order and commend them for a job well done, but where are your representative, are they scared to take a stand, or ashamed that they layed with the dogs and now they have awaken with fleas.

I further say begin to follow the trail of the weapon and you will find out who the person is on the inside that assisted in the break in of the arsenal storage. Who on the force was a friend and associate of Flowers and the others, follow that trail. This is a case that needs trained investigators. I can give you the name of someone right there in Belize who can help you.

What I have found is that Belizeans do not speak sequentially, so the key is not to let them ramble, you have to ask questions in a certain order and allow them to trip themself up, trust me they will give you the truth without even knowing they are doing so.

  28. vicky says:

PLEASE DO NOT BLAME DEAN- THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AMERICAN CITIZEN AND A NATURALIZED CITIZEN ANYWHERE IN ANY COUNTRY OTHER THAN HIS OR HER COUNTRY THEY SEND THEM BACK TO THEIR HOME. . WHEN A NATURALIZED CITIZEN COMMIT A CRIME IN A COUNTRY WHERE HE/SHE IS NOT BORN, HE/SHE IS SENT BACK TO THEIR HOMELAND.
IS THIS CLEAR ENOUGH FOR THE ONES THAT DON’T UNDERSTAND? SO THEREFORE DON’T BLAME DEAN.

  29. deedee says:

It seems as if some of these people on this message board would blame the PM & his government if they got bit in their yard by their own dogs…ya’ll just sad & pathetic. Good job by all the security forces involved.

  30. rod says:

no country has to take back any criminal from anyone have you ever seen iran taking back their criminals or china or russia or venezuela ill tell no they will not take them back so please quit with the stupid answers about dean has no choice he does and he has made it over and over again but judas like tha money why would he stop.by the way excellent comment al.

  31. BT says:

Rod, one of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the right to a nationality. Belize can not refuse to accept a deportee if that person is a Belizean citizen. We may not want them returned to Belize, but there is nothing we (or government) can do.

Vicky, a naturalized citizen is a full citizen and can no more be deported than a person who was born in that country. The only exception is IF the state can prove that the person obtained citizenship through an act of fraud. These Belizean deportees are not naturalized US citizens. If they were they could not be deported.

  32. Al says:

The Bible says that when the right man is in rule over the people, the people are happy. The state of Belize as a country tells me there there have not been a right ruler over Belize in a long time. This is why I keep asking the Ministers and clergy of Belize to start teaching the people about spiritual warfare, the true word of God and to bring christian revival back to the people, so that the country can be better, because then the people will have an understanding of God’s plan for their lives.

So deedee, I do not only blame the current PM, I blame the previous administration also, before Musa you had Barrow, now you have Barrow again. Barrow criticized the Musa administration, but never gave you all a plan for how he will change things. As a country you all live in the moment and not for the future.

Most of all I blame the people of Belize who sell their votes for a one time handout at election time. A fist full of a few dollars, a 4×6 little house on stilts, a few pieces of zinc and whatever else you all decide to sell your future for.

People of Belize you are worth more than a hand out, you deserve to live a decent life. God did not mean for his creation to be born, live a pitiful life and then die. He gave us everything to be happy with, but most of my country people have grown hopeless and lack ambition, they seem to say it is my lot to be poor, so be it. Wake up, get up and demand a better response from your government. YOU will not get better until you see yourself having better, until you understand that you deserve to live well and not just allow the few in Belize to prosper, while you live and die in deep poverty.

    PLEASE WAKE UP

  33. OriginalWoman says:

ROD YOU ARE REALLY A STUPID IDIOT AND ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH YOU ARE JUST AS STUPID AND IGNORANT!!!!

  34. Elgin Martinez says:

@ BT A naturalized citizen of the US can be deported to his or her country of origin if he or she committed a Terrorist act against the US so don’t get it twisted.

  35. junia says:
