PASMO works on manual for persons living with HIV

Pan American Social Marketing Organization or PASMO Belize was founded in 1999 to work in HIV/AIDS prevention.  The organization strives to direct its resources where they are most needed by locating at-risk and vulnerable populations and developing tailored strategies to reach each respective group. According to Guadalupe Huitron, Pasmo’s Country Manager, the organization is currently working on an educational booklet for people affected with HIV.

“We created the website which provides information to persons living with HIV, their family and friends on various topics that is of importance to them. However, we know that in Belize, not everyone has access to internet so we decided then to create educational pamphlet or as we are calling it, an informational kit that can be disseminated to the various parts of the country and provided that we have collaboration with individuals in those districts, we can disseminate them to persons living with HIV.”

“What kind of information would be in these pamphlets and where can we find them when you are through with it?”

Guadalupe Huitron

“Okay so various information can be found. Most importantly we are going to talk about support groups, sexually transmitted infections, the importance of adherence, we are also going to talk about nutrition and mental and emotional health in addition to the rights and responsibilities of persons living with HIV. We are going to begin by doing a first round dissemination in which we are going to collaborate mostly with the Ministry of Health and the clinics that provides testing and counseling for individuals. Once we test this and we see how we proceed with the dissemination, then we’ll try to expand to other organizations that have contact with persons living with HIV. We must be clear that while the website is for persons living HIV, family and friends, this packet is specifically for persons living with HIV and was created with feedback from persons living with HIV currently in Belize. So it wasn’t created by us. We had focus groups in which we received feedback from these individuals as to what they wish to be included in this package.”

“How does today session tie into your efforts?”

Guadalupe Huitron

“Well obviously as professionals, we have to validate all the work that we do especially the work that is disseminated to the population. This committed is composed of different professionals such as yourself that we hope to get feedback on what it is that we have created. Now as you know, a lot of things came out of this including the importance of making the language in the kit culturally appropriate to Belize. So my hope is at the end of the day, we are able to create a kit that is both needed by the community—hence the feedback that we received from the focus groups—and is validated by our colleagues and professionals as to not only the information, but language used.”

  1. Storm says:

That’s a good goal, but we need a lot more education on sexual disease and pregnancy prevention.

Girls getting pregnant when they cannot afford a child and when there is no reasonable likelihood that the father will marry them and raise the child leads to the biggest social problem we have — children born into a life of poverty and hopelessness, crippled from birth by irresponsible parents. Fix that, and you will see gangs disappear, replaced by functioning families.
