Cumberbatch Guilty of Attempted Murder on island
Shortly after midday today, a jury of nine persons went into the deliberating room to discuss the case of twenty-eight year old Knox Cumberbatch, who was on trial for Attempted Murder. Two hours later, they returned before Justice Adolph Lucas and announced that Cumberbatch was found guilty of trying to kill Uwani Nunez, Leroy Ramos and Magdaleno Martinez in San Pedro on July twenty-eighth, 2007. The trial began last week Tuesday and Prosecutor Shamilla Williams called several witnesses, including the three victims. Nunez testified that he was hanging out with friends when Cumberbatch rode up and then shot him. Martinez and Ramos, who told the court that Martinez had an altercation with Cumberbatch earlier in the day and that he returned to Park on bicycle and open fire at the group. Nunez yelled that he had been shot and that’s when Martinez and Ramos say they set chase behind the gunman. The men further testified that Cumberbatch could not escape because riding his bicycle through the sand was difficult. They caught up with him and a struggle ensued, but he wiggled out of his shirt and ran into nearby water. But the men say they were in the area, when Cumberbatch came back out of the water; Martinez hit him on the head with a rock and they managed to subdue him and held him until the police arrived to detain him. In his defense, Cumberbatch told the court that he heard the gunshots and then saw people running all over the place. He said that he got into a fight with two persons who had approached him on the island and was later arrested. Cumberbatch questioned why evidence such as the weapon police claim they found on him was not presented in court. But he only convinced one juror while eight believed he was guilty. Judge Lucas has deferred sentencing until July thirteenth.
