Pirates steal boat at sea

Several hours following the Colson Caye robbery, Belize Coast Guard officials were once again called out to sea where they responded to the theft of a fishing vessel which was moored in the vicinity of Long Caye.  Shortly before dawn today, Nelson Andradi, the owner of a twenty-three foot fiberglass skiff, reported that his vessel was stolen from the island, situated northeast of Belize City between Hicks Caye and Caye Chapel.  An investigation was launched into the disappearance of the boat which was later found in the Belize River with its forty horsepower Yamaha engine missing.

Lt. Gregory Soberanis, Operations Officer, Belize Coast Guard

Gregory Soberanis

“Somewhere between three-thirty and four o’clock this morning there was a vessel theft in the area of Long Caye, just south of Caye Caulker.  The gentleman reported that at three o’clock this morning they did a check and the vessel was there.  Approximately an hour later when they conducted a secondary check the vessel was nowhere to be found.  We conducted a search in the area that we know vessels are normally taken when they are stolen from that area; however, just about, I’d say half hour or so ago, we received a call that the vessel was found in the Belize River somewhere in the vicinity of [the Riverside] Tavern and Quality Poultry and of course [with its] engines missing and the vessel [was] partially submerged.  We’ve definitely seen an increase in coastal piracy over the past few months so we just want to encourage mariners and boat owners to be more vigilant in securing their vessels.”

If piracy is increasing, ask for international help. I’ve read there are international programs, like through the UN, to help protect waters from pirates. Of course, that assumes the leaders have the desire to try to do something more than just talk about the problem. I think BDF should take over the Coast Guard so there is unified command, accountability, and discipline. CG was set up as a separate operation by Hon. Ralph Fonseca, and that always makes me suspicious.
