Witness’ amnesia leads to murder acquittal

Leonardo Cassanova

In the courts, two Belize City men are free tonight after they were found not guilty of the 2008 murder of Edgar Seguro on Oleander Street in the Saint Martin’s De Porres area of Belize City. The cold blooded murder occurred in front of a group of persons just after four on the afternoon of March twenty-sixth 2008.  Twenty-seven year old Art Skeet along with his alleged co-conspirator, thirty year old Leonardo Casanova were charged for the crime.

But today, the main witness in the case who prosecutor Meagan Francis was relying on to seal a conviction, appeared to have acquired a case of amnesia and told the court that she does not remember anything from the day in question. So without a testimony placing the men as the shooters, Francis was forced to close her case.  Hubert Elrington, attorney for the two accused, submitted that there was no evidence before the court to prove that his client committed the crime and that they should be acquitted of the charge. Justice Herbert Lord upheld the no-case submission and both Skeet and Casanova were able to leave the court as free men.

Murder in broad daylight in front of a “group of persons,” and police can only find one witness?

Another ridiculous miscarriage of justice by our failed law enforcement / prosecutorial team.

This case underscores why I support private citizens protecting their our communities. Should we go to our own slaughter like lambs, or fight back and defend our families?

Finally, do these fine boys have jobs waiting for them in the Ministry of Works?
