Attempted murder or bogus charge? Family say accused is innocent

Norman McKenzie

The motive and the series of events that led to the shooting of twenty-one year old Keon Johnson in the Old Capital on June twenty-eighth is still up in the air. But today, former convict, twenty-one year old Norman McKenzie—who was accused of firing the weapon that injured Johnson on the left foot—was charged in the court of Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith. The Port Loyola resident who was unrepresented was arraigned for three indictable offenses: Attempted Murder, Wounding and Use of Deadly Means of Harm. No plea was taken from McKenzie and due to the nature of the offenses; he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August thirtieth. But did McKenzie really shoot Johnson? News Five spoke with McKenzie’s mother, Louise, who says that her son was actually at home at the time of the incident.

Louise McKenzie, Mother of Norman McKenzie

“I know my son was at home; me and my daughter, who is a special police constable; my other daughter and his girlfriend was here too. So I don’t know what time he had to left and go and come back to do any stupidness like that.”

Jose Sanchez

“So you clearly saying that your son was home with the rest of the family?”

Louise McKenzie

Louise McKenzie

“Yes he was home all the while.”

Jose Sanchez

“His bail was revoked for a previous offence and now he has been remanded, right?”

Louise McKenzie

“He is remanded to the Kolbe Foundation.”

Jose Sanchez

“But why would this young man Keon say that he shot him?”

Louise McKenzie

“I think Keon has a grievance against my son for a previous thing that happened before. Ih just hate fi see my son out. I don’t know; just a grievance against my son. Yesterday I meet one of Keon’s relatives and ih told me, Miss McKenzie, Keon shot himself, so why is he telling lies on Norman. Even the police force they are saying that this young man shot himself, Keon friends are saying he shot himself. So I noh know why dehn wah charge my son fi attempt murder.”

According to Johnson, at about nine p.m. last Thursday, he was exiting a pickup truck on Central American Boulevard when McKenzie allegedly fired a single shot in his direction with caught him in his left foot. McKenzie was recently released on parole. He was serving a seven-year sentence handed down by Justice Herbert Lord after he pled guilty for the shooting of his brother-in-law, Simon Castillo back in January 2008.

Hang him hang him when found guilty.

  2. Al says:

This poor mother is in such denial, I believe if she saw her son with the smoking gun in his hand she would make some excuse for him, like the gun fired itself. This person tried to kill his brother-in-law and this woman is still crying fowl, she is responsible for this boys action, she is an enabler of his violence. If the sister who is a special police constable lies on the stand, charge her too and fire her from the force. This is why the police force is so mesed up, these dysfuctional families are the suppliers of the candidates and when you plant dysfunction you get dysfunction, we see the lack of quality people on the force. Better screening and selection process needs to be in place.

Attempted Murder, Wounding and Use of Deadly Means of Harm. I would also add 3 more charges: discharged a firearm in public, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunitions.

  4. KEKI says:

Is that mother crazy???? who shot themselves just to spite another???

  5. KEKI says:

Keon must be crazy? watch out for Keon……. that mother is living in complete denial…!!

  6. Storm says:

No sympathy, no mercy. Norman has been doing too much damage for too long, time for him to do his time. A long, LONG time.

Mother, look in the mirror — he is a product of how you raised him, more than anything else.

  7. Storm chaser says:

Hey storm !!!! His getting in trouble had nothing to do with his mother. Once kids are aoway from home or move out, you don’t what they are doing 24/7 !! I gather from your comments that you either don’t have kids or they are no longer in your home !! Think before you comment next time!!
